Wolf defeats Becdirfor Little b title
STRUTHERS -- Wolf Construction scored five runs in the first inning and seven in the third, in defeating Becdir 12-1 to win the Class Little b championship series at Cene Park Tuesday.
Wolf Construction won the best-of-5 series three games to none.
Rob Sullivan had three hits for Wolf Construction, while J.C. McCoy had a double and single, and Bill Herman singled twice. McCoy also had four RBIs, while Herman and Jesse Alfuno had two each.
Sam Banker pitched a complete game for the win, allowing seven hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.
Ben Detwiler had two hits and an RBI for Becdir.
Thunder Orangewins Mantle crown
STRUTHERS -- Thunder Orange scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to defeat Thunder Blue 4-2 for the Mickey Mantle 14-15-year old state championship Tuesday at Cene Park.
Bryan Fair collected three hits to pace Orange and Chris Gacom allowed five hits as he pitched a complete game for the win.
Castillo headedto Westminster
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Alex Castillo, an Austintown Fitch High graduate, will continue his soccer career at Westminster College.
Castillo earned Steel Valley Conference first team honors twice as well as All-District team honors twice, Mahoning County first team honors and first team district honors.
Zakrajsek wins javelin
Matt Zakrajsek of Howland, competing for the Austintown Community Track Club, took first place in the young men's javelin throw with a toss of 147 feet, 6 inches, at the USATF Regional track and field championships in Charleston, W.Va. He finished third in the discus (160-5).
George Fetchko of Howland took first place in the discus (172-9) and he was fourth in the javelin (124-0). Steve Burkholder of Champion was second in the shot put (48-4) and fifth in the discus (138-5).
Michelle Rossio of Mineral Ridge and Warren JFK won the young women's discus (142-5) and she was third in the shot put (35-6).
Alexandra Rathburn of Berlin Center placed second in the young girls shot put (35-6) and third in the discus (91-4).
Springfield's Nick Panezich earned a bye to the 2003 USATF Junior Olympic Nationals, in the young men's discus, shot put and javelin by making the 2003 USA IAAF World Youth team competing in Sherbrooke, Canada.
Other ACTC team members competing were Emily Dolsak of McDonald, fourth in the young girls discus (84-1) and seventh in the shot (27-9); Jenna Brian of Niles, fifth in the young women's discus (113-9) and sixth in the shot put (29-2).
In the midget girls division, Ariel Fetchko of Howland placed fourth in the discus (58-7) and eighth in the shot (25-5).
New coach
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Don Augustine, a Cardinal Mooney High and Westminster College graduate, has been hired as a Titans' assistant football and head men's and women's track and field coach.
He returns to Westminster after serving as an assistant football coach at Temple.
Augustine was a three-year letterman at outside linebacker for the Titans from 1998-2000 after transferring from Ohio Northern.
Warren manmisses cut
GALLOWAY, N.J. -- Daniel Metzendorf of Warren failed to make the cut after two rounds of the Amateur Publinks at Blue Heron Pines Golf Club on Tuesday.
Metzendorf scored 76-79 -- 155 on the 7,127-yard, par 71 east course.

Lifter suspended
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- U.S. weightlifter Edris Gonzales was suspended for six years after testing positive for testosterone use.
Gonzales showed elevated ratios of testosterone-epitestosterone at an out-of-competition test Feb. 21. He accepted the suspension, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said.

Second gold medal
BARCELONA, Spain -- Russia's Alexander Dobroskok captured his second gold medal at the World Swimming Championships, winning the 3-meter springboard when teammate Dimity Sautin made a mistake on his final dive.
Dobroskok scored 788.37 points followed by China's Peg Bo with 780.84 and Sautin with 776.64. Sautin had been leading through the first five dives.
Female referee
GENEVA -- A female referee will officiate at the UEFA Cup for the first time next month when she works a men's game between Swedish and Icelandic teams in the European club competition.
Switzerland's Nicole Petignat, a top referee for women's games, was chosen Tuesday by European soccer's ruling body to officiate the qualifying round game between AIK Solna of Sweden and Iceland's Fylkir on Aug. 14.
