LEETONIA -- Superintendent Tom Inchak is still hopeful the Leetonia High School varsity football team will open the season on its home field.
Construction was delayed 30 days because of rain. Excavation work can only be done when the ground is dry, Inchak said.
Four contractors are involved in the construction, and each has other projects also delayed by the wet weather, he said.
Inchak said the first four games are to be played at home, so there is a "Plan B."
"Columbiana has graciously offered us their field if we need it," he said.
"It's possible we'll start the season on our home field and probable that we'll play at least some of the games there."
Inchak said if Leetonia teams need to use the Columbiana field, the games would be on Saturday.
Moving on
Inchak said crews are starting the foundation for the bleachers and a maintenance building at the stadium. Workers continue to dig trenches for electric, water and sewer lines. The scoreboard will be installed in the next few weeks, he said.
Inchak said the rain has helped grass on the softball and baseball fields grow well.
This past season, the baseball and softball teams played all their games away. The softball and baseball fields were near the Orchard Hill building, which was demolished to make way for the new school.
Leetonia voters in 1998 approved school officials' request to borrow $1.6 million and pay the loan back through the sale of bonds. The Ohio School Facilities Commission approved $15 million for the project from its state building assistance fund.
