FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRANKLIN, PA .... Tri-City Speedway and DTR, LLC, officials have announced that NASCAR Winston Cup Series(r) drivers Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace are two of the four series stars that will be racing in the Race of Champions & quot;Driven to Rock & quot; event on Sunday September 7.
In addition, track and event officials released news that the Late Models will be the featured division at the event along with musical group Pointswest, which will offer its blend of rock n' roll on stage before the racing action begins at the Venango County half-mile oval.
Schrader and Wallace are NASCAR Winston Cup Series(r) veterans and come to Tri-City with dirt track experience from their early days as racers on St. Louis, Mo.-area tracks.
Schrader, who currently drives the BAM Racing Dodge No. 49, has four career wins on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series(r) and was the Rookie-of-the-Year in 1985. The 1983 USAC Silver Crown Series champion also sat on the pole for the Daytona 500 in three consecutive years (1988-90).
Wallace, who is the younger brother of fellow NASCAR Winston Cup Series(r) drivers Rusty and Mike Wallace, currently drives the Stacker 2 Dodge No. 23 for Bill Davis Racing. He was the 1991 NASCAR Busch Series(r) champion and has nine career wins in the junior series. He is still searching for his first win in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series(r) with a best career finish of second in the 2001 Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
& quot;We're excited to have Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace as part of the show on September 7th, & quot; said Tri-City Co-Promoter Mike Graham. & quot;They have a lot of dirt track experience, which should make it a lot of fun for them and the fans. We expect to announce the names of the other drivers in the near future. & quot;
The Late Models will headline the show, which will include two 10-lap events for Schrader, Wallace and their fellow NASCAR Winston Cup Series(r) drivers. Those drivers will compete in four of the local full-bodied machines. Gates are slated to open at 5 p.m. with a driver autograph session scheduled from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. when the racing action begins. The Late Models will run a complete show of heats, consis and a feature event. One week earlier, the Late Models will make their first appearance at Tri-City since 1997, which means the division will be in action two weeks in a row.
& quot;Given the schedule of events at other area tracks, the Late Models are the perfect fit with the Race of Champions 'Driven to Rock' program, & quot; said Graham. & quot;Also, the racing starts a little later than normal on a Sunday night, and, for the benefit of the fans, the Late Models will be a stand-alone event. We know the drivers and teams will support this event and they'll be ready to put on a good show for all the fans we expect to attend. We're still looking at some other options for the Late Models too. & quot;
The show is billed as the Race of Champions & quot;Driven to Rock & quot;, and music will be part of the event. Fredrick, Md.-based Pointswest will be the headline act from 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The four-man band formed in 1999 and is touring the United States this summer. Pointswest plays a soulful blend of rock music that has attracted a legion of fans. Band members include lead singer and guitarist Rollie Belles, lead guitarist Mike Ligocki, bass guitarist Kevin Collins, and drummer Jay Combs.
In the near future, ticket outlets will be announced for advance sale tickets for the Race of Champions & quot;Driven to Rock & quot; event. Adult grandstand admission will be $25 and pit admission will be $30.
Sponsorship packages are still available for the event, including private autograph sessions with one of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series(r) drivers. Arrangements must be made with DTR, LLC, and potential sponsors may contact Tri-City's main office for more information at (814) 473-4038.
Tri-City Speedway is owned and operated by Roger and Susie Crick and Mike and Margaret Graham. They have promoted Sunday night racing at the popular facility since they reopened it in 1996. Currently, the Super Sprints, DIRT Modifieds, E Mods, Pro Stocks and Thundercars race each week. Tri-City is located seven miles north of Franklin off State Route 417.
