Drug-buyer raped
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 42-year-old Canfield woman told police she came to town Tuesday night to buy drugs and was raped by two men who said they'd take her to "make the buy."
The North Hillside Road woman said the two men, whom she didn't know, approached her at Hillman Street and Parkwood Avenue on the South Side about 10 p.m.
She got into their car, which traveled down Oak Hill Avenue and then to an unidentified location on the North Side, which she described as a long brick building. The men took turns raping her and then dropped her off near St. Elizabeth Health Center, reports show.
The woman walked to the hospital and was interviewed there by police.
West Side robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- After a robbery victim screamed for help Tuesday evening on Donald Avenue, neighbors chased two men, one of whom police found hiding in an Elberen Street house nearby.
Police arrested Ronald Best, 42, of Compass West, Austintown, on an aggravated robbery charge after the victim identified him.
The 65-year-old victim said he found two men in his garage about 6:50 p.m. The victim said he was slightly injured when one of the robbers grabbed his wallet. He began yelling when they left.
Two neighbors on Elberen chased the robbers, one of whom got away. Police said Best ran into 2135 Elberen. The resident gave police permission to search the place.
Best had stuffed his nylon jacket under a mattress in a second-floor bedroom and hid under covers, police said.
Boys captured
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two of four boys who jumped out of a stolen car on George Street were captured by police working a Gun Reduction Interdiction Project detail at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Westlake Terrace area.
The 16-year-old Victor Street driver faces charges of receiving stolen property and improper operation on a temporary permit.
The front passenger, 14, of East Philadelphia Avenue, faces a charge of receiving stolen property.
Both were taken to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.
Police first spotted the stolen 1990 Honda traveling the wrong way on Madison Avenue and pursued it.
Lunch prices go up
LOWELLVILLE -- The school board has raised lunch prices for the coming school year. Pupils in grades one through six will now pay $1.50, up from $1.25. Those in grades seven through 12 will pay $1.75, up from $1.50. Staff will pay $2.50, up from $2.
Intruders in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three young male burglars broke a locked screen door, invaded the home of an elderly couple in the 1400 block of Atkinson Avenue, pushed them around and damaged their telephone to prevent them from calling police about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday.
The intruders searched the house for things to steal, but fled empty-handed when the victims pushed an audible alarm button, police said.
Theft in Canfield Twp.
CANFIELD -- Someone entered a township home in the 8000 block of Camden Way Tuesday evening through an unlocked rear window and stole $45,000 worth of electronics equipment and custom-made jewelry, the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department said.
The resident told deputies that when he returned home at 11:30 p.m., he found the main bedroom ransacked.
Adopt-A-Pet Event
YOUNGSTOWN -- Giant Eagle's first Adopt-A-Pet Event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of Cornersburg Giant Eagle, 3265 Canfield Road.
The event, in association with Dad's Pet Care, will provide customers an opportunity to adopt dogs and cats and ask questions related to pet care.
