HUBBARD -- American flags at the Hubbard police and fire departments were at half-staff this morning in honor of a 49-year-old volunteer firefighter who died in a two-vehicle crash.
Daniel Barr was riding his motorcycle westbound on Chestnut Ridge Road about 8:58 a.m. Sunday when a pickup truck, turning left, drove into his path, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Barr was on his way to Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground to prepare for the fire department's annual family picnic, said Hubbard Volunteer Fire Chief David Kyle.
Kyle said his crew was called to the accident but did not know Barr was involved until they arrived.
Kyle, who has served with the department for 21 years, said Barr, a captain for the department, has volunteered for the past 20 years; Barr's son, Eric, also works as a volunteer firefighter.
"Danny was Danny," Kyle said. "He was one of the best guys we had. He was not afraid to get his hands dirty. If something needed done, he was right in there, making sure it got done."
Helped in training
Kyle said Barr also worked as a corrections officer at Trumbull Correctional Institution in Warren and often used the training he received there to help train other firefighters. Last week, he instructed a class on pepper spray for firefighters, Kyle said.
Barr, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene, reports state.
No charges have been filed. The name of the pickup driver is not being released until the investigation is completed, OSHP officials said.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home in Hubbard. Kyle also said firefighters will talk with Barr's wife, Peg, to plan a service in his honor.
