PLANT OF THE WEEK Mandevilla Vine or Dipladenia Vine

Botanical name: Mandevilla x amoena "Alice du Pont"
Attributes: Shocking-pink flowers create a real spectacle on this vigorous dark-leafed tropical vine. This plant flowers freely all summer, making it the perfect choice for climbing on a trellis or arbor. When planted in containers with an arch, it creates a dramatic entrance to the home or garden.
Bloom color: Bright rose pink
Bloom time: May through October
Culture: Purchase healthy plants from a reputable nursery in the largest size available. Place in full sun. Plant Mandevilla vine in fertile, humus-rich soil; water regularly to keep moist; and fertilize every two weeks with a 20-10-20 water-soluble solution. Or plant in a large container with sturdy support like a trellis or stakes to keep the vigorous vines upright. At the end of the season, dig and repot to store indoors as a houseplant with bright, warm conditions. The vine also may be kept semi-dormant in a basement at 35 to 40 degrees, but do not allow soil to dry out completely. Prune vigorously in spring when new growth begins to sprout.
Landscape tips: Mandevilla is a show-stopper by itself but also can be used in combination with hibiscus, bananas, oleander or any other tropical plant to create a jungle effect. Blue flowers such as plumbago or Lily of the Nile would complement the bright pink flowers.
Cost: $15 to $45 depending on size of plant or pot. Available at some retail nurseries and garden centers.
