hBook helps transformpool into retreat
A swimming pool can be more than a big blue hole. Catriona Tudor Erler's new book, "Poolscaping," helps readers turn it into a retreat.
Erler's book is filled with ideas for adding life to a pool through landscaping, whether it's a new pool or one that could use a new look. Her book covers all the elements that create a pool's ambience -- decking, enclosures, lighting, waterfalls and fountains, structures, furniture, spas and hot tubs, as well as poolside plantings.
"Poolscaping" is published by Storey Books and is priced at $19.95 in paperback.
Under-tile membraneprevents problems
A long-lasting tiling job depends on a good underlayment. Schluter-DITRA uncoupling membrane is designed to improve that relationship.
The wafflelike, one-eighth-inch-thick polyethylene membrane is sandwiched between the tile and the subfloor or other surface, allowing the surface to move independently of the tile layer. That way, movement such as expansion, contraction and settling won't cause cracks in the tile.
The membrane is waterproof, so it helps keep water or other liquid from reaching and potentially damaging the subfloor or rooms below. The design allows vapor from the subfloor and the adhesive below to escape without putting pressure on the tile layer.
Schluter-DITRA can be special-ordered at most Home Depot stores.
The suggested retail price is $1.54 per square foot for a 323-square-foot roll. It is also available in a 54-square-foot roll.
