FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Canada upset Costa Rica 1-0 on a goal by Paul Stalteri in the 59th minute Saturday in the opening round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Canada, ranked 78th in the world by FIFA and ninth in CONCACAF, faces Cuba on Monday.
Costa Rica, the defending UNCAF Copa de Naciones champions and the third-ranked team in CONCACAF, must defeat Cuba on Wednesday to have a chance of advancing to the quarterfinals.
"Costa Rica had more control of the play, especially in the second half," Canada coach Holger Osieck said. "We resisted and showed a lot of heart."
Jason Bent started the scoring play with a pass from midfield to Stalteri, who moved past the Costa Rican defense. While being flanked by Wilmer Lopez, Stalteri booted a roller past Costa Rica keeper Ricardo Gonzalez, who had rushed out to block the shot.
Costa Rica failed to convert a number of quality chances. In the 38th minute, Alexander Castro hit the crossbar from 15 feet, and Winston Parks missed a header on the rebound.
"It was a very frustrating day for us." said Steve Sampson, the former U.S. coach who now leads Costa Rica. "We created enough chances to win the game, but when you lack precision around the net you give the opponent a chance to win. That's exactly what happened today,"
Canadian keeper Lars Hirschfeld then stopped Parks in the 52nd minute, blocking a shot from close range.
