KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
If the woman in the mall or the grocery store line seems to have forgotten to finish dressing, don't fret. She is probably just a fashion trendoid.
Wearing underwear out in public is a big hit of the summer.
Slip tops worn over denim jeans and bras peeping out from off-the-shoulder blouses are common sights. Satin and charmeuse dresses look like nightgowns.
Designers loved the look on the spring runways. Marc Jacobs did dainty lace camisoles. Tommy Hilfiger's choice of silk charmeuse made his dresses and even cargo pants seem more like bedroom fare. And the idea has been copied on a mass level, down to a lace top for $36 from Esprit.
It's certainly nothing new. Who can forget Madonna's modernization of lingerie when she wore bustiers and bras beginning in the '80s?
But it's an idea that comes and goes. This year's trend is a natural for celebrities with good bodies and an audacious personal style. Keri Russell, for example, has been seen on New York streets in camisoles with jeans. Fashion followers are right with them.
