SCRAPPERS NOTEBOOK From Cafaro Field
Weather issue: The Scrappers' grounds crew did a good job of preparing the field after heavy rain Thursday soaked the Mahoning Valley. The entire left-field warning track was covered in standing water, director of marketing and promotions Jim Riley said. The Scrappers rented a pump and siphoned the water out of the stadium, Riley said. Play was delayed twice in the second inning. A drying agent was applied to the batter's box in the top half, and the home-plate umpire examined the mound at the request of Oneonta pitcher Jordan Tata in the bottom half.
Sidelined: Scrappers third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff missed the team's three-game series in Vermont and continues to nurse a hamstring injury. He is expected back Saturday, Scrappers manager Ted Kubiak said. "He ran today, and he's going to run tomorrow," Kubiak said. Kouzmanoff also took batting practice Thursday. In his absence, Ceasar Suarez has filled in at third.
Late night: Wednesday's Staten Island-Batavia game in Batavia, N.Y., lasted 21 innings, with Staten Island prevailing 5-2. The game lasted 5 hours, 48 minutes, and the Yankees used eight pitchers in the victory at Dwyer Stadium.
Upcoming schedule: The Scrappers will complete their series with Oneonta tonight. Pitcher Scott Roehl (1-1, 1.47 ERA) gets the start for Mahoning Valley, which will play three more home games, against the Lowell Spinners, the short-season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
