Helpful hints will make feet look presentable
Treat your tootsies to tender, loving care before a public appearance.
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
Some people would prefer to avoid this topic altogether, but the subject must be broached.
It's time to talk about foot grooming.
Men and women, if you're going to display your tootsies in this summer's barely-there slides and sandals, please make them presentable for the public.
A pedicure is the best way to go, but not everyone has the time and money to let someone else do the work. You can get your toes and heels in shape for sandals at home; here are some of our favorite feet treats for an at-home pampering session:
UBlissLabs Foot Patrol, a peppermint-scented exfoliating cream that contains salicylic acid to slough off dry skin. Bliss products are available at Neiman Marcus or online at www.blissworld.com.
UDr. Scholl's Pedicure Essentials Ultra Overnight Foot Cream, a cream that softens feet overnight. (By the way, slathering on lotion and then sleeping in socks is a surefire way to soften your feet.) Available at drugstores and discount stores.
UBurt's Bees Coconut Foot Creme contains vitamin E to soften rough skin. It's almost all-natural, and it comes in an easy-to-use squeeze tube. Available at specialty and drugstores, and at www.burtsbees.com.
UPhilosophy Footnotes is a pumice scrub that's rough enough to make you feel like you're exfoliating. Eucalyptus and lavender oils help soften and give feet a soothing smell. Available at www.philosophy.com and www.sephora.com.
UDiamancel files and foot buffers cost a lot ($25-$50), but they're well worth the money and last for about five years. The files contain actual diamond shavings to slough off dead skin and calluses. They also require less effort than a pumice stone. Available at department stores, some drugstores, and at www.beauty.com.
More tootsie tips:
UWash and dry your feet daily; give 'em a soak if you have time.
UScrub those calluses with a file or pumice stone.
UWear shoes that fit. Women, the higher your heels, the worse your calluses will be on the balls of your feet.
USlather on lots of lotion before bed. If you can stand to sleep in socks, put on a pair of pedicure softening socks; they keep moisture close to your feet overnight.
