HELOISE Tip provides neat storage for garden flags
Dear Heloise: I found the perfect way to store my collection of garden flags. I use the metal pants hangers that have four or five "arms." I never liked them very much for pants, but they are perfect for flag storage.
Hope other readers find this idea as useful as I did! I have a collection of flags for each season and holiday, and now it's easy to find the one I'm looking for! Karen Rushatz, Via E-mail
Banner idea! How clever, and also an "another use" hint. Some of the smaller flags can be threaded onto the arms for easy storage! Heloise
Fast facts: Other uses for acrylic, free-standing photo frames:
UUse small frames to hold place cards at a dinner party.
UUse 4-by-6 frames to display dish descriptions on a buffet line.
UUse to hold a phone-number list.
UUse to hold a recipe card during cooking -- it keeps the card clean, too.
Dear Heloise: Give a recent high-school graduate on his or her way to college a great gift by purchasing an address book, a box of mixed greeting cards and several books of stamps. Fill in as many family and friend addresses in the book as possible, and include birth dates and anniversaries.
In this day and age when young people only communicate by computer, this gift is a nice way to remind that generation how important and meaningful "snail mail" can be. Sally Anne Novak, Greensburg, Pa.
Sally, your hint is indeed a nice way to nudge young people to actually write a note. It's much nicer to keep a handwritten letter or card than a printed-out e-mail. Heloise
Dear Heloise: After making a large quantity of deviled eggs to take to a party, I needed a way to keep them from sliding around on a large tray.
I used a bag of shredded cabbage by spreading it over the tray, then I put each egg on the cabbage. Not only did it work to hold the eggs in place, but it also made a decorative presentation. Dave Bolen, Fayetteville, Ark.
Dear Heloise: Photos taken in less-than-ideal situations might be able to be salvaged if you take the negatives to your local one-hour photo developer and ask the developer to adjust for color, brightness, etc.
It's worth a try if you have a great picture that didn't come out very well but you really want it. Or sometimes the pictures can be sent back to the developer for a retry. Give it a try! Patty Dowsett, Council Bluffs, Iowa
Thanks for the reminder. Also, if you have a personal computer and a scanner, you can scan the photo and make it better. Heloise
Dear Heloise: My gripe is to the makers of clothes washers and dishwashers. Why don't they make the lids out of aluminum so they don't rust? The baskets in dishwashers have a plastic coating, but it doesn't take long for a small break in the coating to allow rust to start. Have you ever priced replacing a dishwasher basket? It's absurd! Marilyn Hunt, Wharton, Texas
