TADWORTH, England (AP) -- Former Manchester United and Northern Ireland star George Best was arrested Saturday after a fight at a hotel.
The 57-year-old Best and a 31-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm at the Chequers Hotel, Surrey police said. The men were taken to Reigate police station but were later released without being charged.
Police refused to release further details.
Best, considered one of soccer's most talented players, joined Manchester United when he was 16 and scored 115 goals in 290 league, cup and European games, retiring in 1972. He helped United win the European Champions Cup in 1968.
Best also played 37 times for Northern Ireland, and later played for the Los Angeles Aztecs and the San Jose Earthquakes of the North American Soccer League, and for Hibernian in Scotland.
Best underwent liver transplant surgery on July 30, 2002, to repair damage caused by decades of heavy drinking. Best said at the time he would never drink again. He also had pellets implanted in his stomach to make him sick at the intake of alcohol.
