LIBERTY -- Churchill Counseling Services, with offices at 310 Church Hill-Hubbard Road in Liberty and 3528 Canfield Road, Youngstown, has been accredited by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) for its outpatient mental health programs.
ACS swimming fund-raiser
CANFIELD -- The American Cancer Society is conducting its annual Swim-Along fund-raising campaign through July 21 in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. Children and young adults get pledges or a flat donation for each lap they swim. In 2002, the event netted $17,000 for ACS. This year's goal is $20,000. Pools and swim clubs participating are: Applewood Swim Club, Boardman Tennis and Swim Club, Camp Rachel at Leonard Kirtz School, Canfield Swim Club, Firestone Park, Logan Swim Club, Poland Swim Club, Tippecanoe Country Club and Trumbull Country Club. Free walking guide
The Arthritis Foundation's 2003 walking guide, "Let's Go Walking," is available free by calling (800) 245-2275 or through the Arthritis Foundation Web site www.arthritis.org. The purpose of the guide is to help develop a program of regular, moderate exercise, with tips on getting started, selecting the best shoes and other equipment, and staying motivated.
Gift of Life Walk
LifeBanc and the Lake Erie District/Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs will host the fifth annual Gift of Life Walk on Aug. 23 at Edgewater Park in Cleveland. Registration begins at 8 a.m. followed by the three-mile walk at 9 a.m. The deadline for preregistration is Aug. 1. Preregistration fees are $10 per person; $25 for a family (maximum of four); $8 per team member (minimum of five). Educator of the year
Dr. Andrew T. Filak Jr., a family physician and associate dean for medical education at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, was chosen as the 2003 Educator of the Year by the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Filak, in addition to being professor of family medicine at UCCM, is associate dean for medical education at UC, associate chief of staff for graduate medical education at University Hospital, and assistant vice president for graduate medical education for the Health Alliance for Greater Cincinnati.
Honored for philanthropy
The American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation chose Dr. Theodore E. Wymyslo, of Dayton, as co-recipient of its 2003 Philanthropist of the Year Award. Dr. Wymyslo and co-recipient Dr. William Coleman of Scottsboro, Ala., will be recognized at the Congress of Delegates meeting in New Orleans in October. Dr. Wymyslo was the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians Foundation's 2002 Philanthropist of the Year.
Mammovan at YWCA
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mammovan, a mobile mammography unit sponsored by ENCOREplus Services, will offer breast cancer screenings for eligible Mahoning County women at the YWCA's Phelps Street parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22.
