CAFARO FIELD As Scrappers err, the Tigers roar
Oneonta halted Mahoning Valley's winning streak at three games.

NILES -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers' three-game winning streak came to an end Friday as the Oneonta Tigers took advantage of the Scrappers mistakes to post a 6-3 victory before 4,262 fans at Cafaro Field.
Two Scrappers errors, both by Ceasar Suarez, who was filling in for injured third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff, allowed three Tigers to score and proved to be the difference in the game.
"Ceasar is a third baseman, and he can play all around. He wasn't out of position," said Scrappers manager Ted Kubiak. "He made a bad decision in the first inning that was costly, but he's played well for us this year."
In the first inning, with two outs and the bases loaded for Oneonta, Suarez fielded a ground ball by Curtis Brown. He elected to go to second base for the force out, but he threw wildly, allowing two runs to score.
In the fifth inning, Suarez bobbled a hard hit grounder by Danilo Sanchez, also with two outs, and his throw was late to first, allowing another run to score.
Scrappers fall behind
The Scrappers, who trailed 5-0, tried to cut away at the Tigers' lead, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth and adding a solo home run off the bat of Ryan Goleski in the sixth inning. But they never really threatened in any other inning.
Kubiak said that everything is fine with his team at this point of the season.
"We just took two out of three from this club and we've beaten Auburn five times, and those are two of the better teams in the [New York-Penn] league," Kubiak said. "Tonight it was just a loss and nothing more."
Mahoning Valley's starting pitcher, Scott Roehl (1-2), threw the first five innings. He should have escaped the first with no runs, but in the third he gave up a single to Tony Giarrantano, an RBI triple to Kody Kirkland and then a two-run homer to Kelly Hunt, which gave the Tigers a 5-0 advantage.
Other than the third inning, he pitched well, allowing seven hits, three earned runs with two strikeouts.
Three in relief
Relievers Adam Hanson, Chris White and Mark Harris all shut down the Tigers over the final four innings. Hanson threw two innings, allowing just one hit, while White only walked one batter in his inning and Harris allowed an infield single in the ninth.
"I thought Harris and White threw very well, as did Hanson," Kubiak said. "Roehl had the one bad inning, but he also threw very hard."
Kubiak said that Kouzmanoff, who has a pulled hamstring, was running some on Friday.
"He'll probably be the DH tomorrow and we'll see how he does," Kubiak said.
The Scrappers will begin a three-game series with the Lowell Spinners tonight at Cafaro Field at 7:05.
Mahoning Valley (14-10) had seven hits against the Tigers, with Goleski and Mike Conroy leading the attack with two hits each.
Goleski had the big hit in the sixth when he smashed a long home run to deep left-center field. Josh Noviskey drove in two runs for the Scrappers with a double down the left-field line in the fourth inning.
He also ran into a tag at third base, which took the Scrappers out of a possible big inning.
Oneonta (15-8), now in first place in the Stedler Division, had nine hits, with Giarrantano and Kirkland getting three each. Kirkland had a triple and a double.
Andy Baldwin pitched the first five innings and picked up his second victory for the Tigers.
