2 village children win state awards for parks photos
The goal was to capture the diversity of Ohio as expressed in its parks system.
WELLSVILLE -- Two Wellsville youngsters' pictures were among the best entries in the Ohio State Parks' Bicentennial Photo Contest.
A picture of Marblehead Lighthouse along Lake Erie in Ottawa County earned first place in the historical structure's youth competition for Kaitlin Thrasher, 9, of Main Street, state officials recently announced.
Kaitlin is the daughter of Marie Thompson and Richard Thrasher. She will be a third-grader this fall at St. Aloysius School in East Liverpool.
Ten-year-old Ryan Martin of Osborne Road won the heritage category's youth competition with his photo of a pioneer blacksmith re-enactor working at Beaver Creek State Park, north of East Liverpool.
Ryan is the son of Terri and Dewayne Martin. This fall, he will be entering the fifth grade at Wellsville Middle School.
According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, nearly 100 entries were submitted for the contest.

The photos taken by Kaitlin and Ryan, as well as the other winners' pictures, can be viewed on the ODNR Web site at www. ohiodnr.com.
The pictures also will appear this fall in the bicentennial issue of the Ohio State Parks magazine.
The ODNR announced the competition last fall.
Entrants were encouraged to capture the rich diversity of Ohio's history as it is demonstrated in the state park system.
