BOARDMAN -- The Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help out at its first aid station at the Canfield Fair.
People don't need first-aid experience to become a volunteer; however, a basic certification is required.
The first-aid station treats more than 700 patients a year. Call (330) 726-6063.
Cruiser purchase OK'd
HOWLAND -- Township trustees have authorized the purchase of a 2003 Chevrolet Impala police cruiser.
The $20,208 car will replace an older model in the township's 19-vehicle fleet.
Trustees also voted Friday to hire Mary Ann Roberts, now a substitute secretary for the township, to work part-time in the township postal center. She will earn $8.28 an hour, with no benefits.
Collecting school supplies
BOARDMAN -- Marc's discount department stores are collecting school supplies for pupils in need. The retailer will have collection bins at its stores in Boardman and other northeast Ohio areas.
Items will be distributed to local schoolchildren through the School, Home & amp; Office Product Association's Kids in Need program.
First Responders
LOWELLVILLE -- The volunteer fire department has received a $500 donation from the American Heart Association and the Junior Women's League of Canfield for the village's new First Responders program, which will offer immediate medical assistance before the arrival of area medics.
Fire chief William Meehan said the department also got $500 from Demolition Corporation, which bought used hose and hose fittings from the department. That money will go toward fire department equipment, Meehan said.
Paving projects approved
LOWELLVILLE -- Village council approved the paving of First Street from Wood Street to Liberty Street for $4,000. High Street will be paved for $3,400.
Both projects will be done by Butch & amp; McCree Co. of Hillsville, Pa. Additional paving at Lowellville Park will be done by Penn Ohio Sealing Co. of Youngstown for $4,900.
United Way golf outing
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The United Way of Lawrence County will have its annual golf outing in memory of John Perelman on Monday at the New Castle Country Club.
This is the only fund-raising event sponsored by the United Way in preparation for the fall campaign.
The event will begin at noon with lunch and a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Team prizes range from $120 to $1,200.
There will be skill prizes and a steak and chicken dinner. Cost is $160 per person.
Pond Fest planned
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Soil & amp; Water Conservation District will have its Pond Fest from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 26 at the Canfield Conservation and Sportsmen's Club.
Among the topics in the adult sessions are pond construction, fish stocking, weed identification and control, and pond and watercraft safety.
Children's activities will include swim tests.
The Sportsmen's Club is on West Calla Road in Goshen Township.
Attendees are encouraged to bring swimsuits, sunscreen, insect repellent and lawn chairs or blankets.
A $5 registration fee is due by July 23 and includes lunch.
