Leadership promotion
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christopher J. McCarty has been named president and chief executive officer of the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership organization, which provides youth leadership opportunities for high school students across the nation.
McCarty is the former regional director of communications for Humility of Mary Health Partners. He founded and operated the Continental Communication Services and Vanguard Communications advertising agencies for consumer and industrial companies. He has been a HOBY volunteer for 12 years and is a former national board member.
HOBY, based in Los Angeles, was founded in 1958 by actor Hugh O'Brian after a visit to Africa, during which he visited Dr. Albert Schweitzer, who devoted much of his life to serving Africans in need of medical care. Since its inception, more than 250,000 youngsters have participated in HOBY programs focused on "motivating tomorrow's leaders today." The organization is supported by various corporations, individuals and service groups.
STATE PATROL
New staff lieutenant
Kenneth M. Garloch Jr., a native of Boardman and graduate of Boardman High School and Youngstown State University, has been promoted to staff lieutenant with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
He will be assigned to the Bucyrus district headquarters. He joined the patrol in 1985 as a cadet dispatcher at the Lisbon post. He has been commander at the Marion post since 1998. He and his wife and three children live in Caledonia.
DOCTORS
Receives degrees
Jason Edward Rock, son of Kathleen Rock of Youngstown, received his doctor of medicine degree and his master of public health degree from Ohio State University.
Dr. Rock, who is married to Kristen Fawcett of Youngstown, is a 1993 graduate of Ursuline High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Harvard University. Dr. Rock will do his residency in psychiatry at The Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Veterinary medicine
Stephen Miletta, son of Bruno and Shirley Miletta of Poland, earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine.
While attending, he was vice president of the Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, vice president and historian of the student chapter of the American Association of Bovine Practitioner, and sergeant-at-arms and fund-raiser chairman for Omega Tau Sigma Veterinary Fraternity.
He is a 1994 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, and he earned a bachelor's degree in animal science from Ohio State University.
He will be practicing with Lisbon Veterinary Clinic in Columbiana.
Doctor of dental surgery
Shawn Frank Catlos, son of Marty and Connie Catlos of Salem, recently received his doctor of dental surgery degree from Ohio State University's College of Dentistry.
Dr. Catlos, a 1995 graduate of Salem High School and valedictorian, graduated magna cum laude from Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa., in 1999 with his bachelor's degree in biology.
While attending dental school, Catlos was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, an honor society that recognizes students in the top 15 percent of their class. He graduated cum laude and received the Academy of General Dentistry Achievement Award.
Dr. Catlos will complete a one-year hospital-based residency at OSU Medical Center in Columbus. He and his wife, the former Allison Culver of Littleton, N.H., live in Hillard, Ohio.
Medical degree
Daniel Patrick Smith, son of David and Kathleen Smith of Esme Drive, Liberty, has earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo.
Dr. Smith, a 1995 graduate of Liberty High School, attended Youngstown State University, where he graduated, summa cum laude, with a bachelor's degree in biology in 1999.
While at YSU, he was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and an active member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
He will begin his career with a preliminary year of general surgery at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Ky., followed by a residency in orthopedic surgery.
