Biology degree
Air Force Cadet Christina M. McCarty has graduated from the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., with a bachelor of science degree in biology, and was commissioned a second lieutenant.
McCarty is scheduled to attend undergraduate pilot training at the Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Fla. She is the daughter of Timothy and Deborah McCarty of Jackson Center, Pa., and granddaughter of Jack and Rae Earley of Orlando, Fla. She graduated in 1999 from Ellicottville Central High School, Ellicottville, N.Y.

Air Force: Reserve Airman 1st Class Karen L. Moorhouse (Palm Springs, Calif., High School '90, associate degree, Platt College, Calif., '02), daughter of Richard Moorhouse of San Bernardino, Calif., and sister of Debra DeConcilus of Girard.

Serving in Michigan
Navy Reserve Lt. j.g. Timothy B. Baker, son of Maryann B. Baker of Youngstown, was promoted to his current rank while serving at Naval Reserve Center Detroit, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mount Clemens, Mich. He is a 1988 graduate of Linsly Institute of Wheeling, W.Va.
HONORS
Service medal
Army Lt. Col. Terry L. Hoyt has been awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal, which he earned while serving as the logistics deputy chief for European Command-Forward/Task Force-North in Turkey.
An expert negotiator, Hoyt helped win concessions from host nation officials to expedite the movement of thousands of tons of resources in direct support of a northern front to be launched from Turkey. He served as the single point of contact for all military services where and when needed.
Hoyt, regularly assigned to Headquarters U.S. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany, is the son of Don W. and Audrey Hoyt of East Liverpool. He graduated in 1971 from East Liverpool High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1976 from Ohio University, Athens. In 1996, he earned a master's degree from Central Michigan University.
Commendation medal
Army Sgt. Brian D. Smoot was decorated with the Army Commendation Medal while assigned to Alpha Co., 125th Signal Battalion, Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii. He is the son of Walter D. and Janet L. Smoot of New Castle, Pa., and a 1999 graduate of Neshannock High School, New Castle.
ROTC SCHOLARSHIPS
Austintown grad
Christopher J. Toth, son of George and Barbara Toth of Austintown, has received a Naval ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) college scholarship and will attend Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va., this fall. Toth, a 2003 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, will be commissioned an ensign upon graduation and completion of the ROTC program.
East Palestine grad
Christopher L. Clark has been awarded an Air Force ROTC college scholarship. Upon graduating from college and completing the ROTC program, he will be commissioned a second lieutenant. Clark is the son of Edward L. Clark and Elizabeth A. Bowles, both of East Palestine, and is a 2003 graduate of East Palestine High School.

Returns from Arabian Gulf
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Leonardo J. Platt, grandson of George Robbert of Hubbard, has returned from a five-month deployment to the Arabian Gulf while assigned to the amphibious transport dock ship USS Ponce, homeported in Norfolk, Va. Platt is a 1997 graduate of Franklin, Pa., High School.
Term in Kuwait
Marine Reserve Gunnery Sgt. Steve M. Gallegos, son of Barbara A. and George L. Hern of Lisbon, recently completed a five-month deployment to Kuwait while assigned to the Marine Corps Reserve's Third Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO), home-based in Terminal Island, Calif.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom, teams from Gallegos' unit controlled close air support missions throughout the Ramallah Oil Fields and the city of Basrah, Iraq's second largest city.
Other 3rd ANGLICO teams patrolled the Iran-Iraq border and initiated civil military operations in the city of Al Medinah, on the banks of the Euphrates River.
Gallegos is a 1983 graduate of David Anderson High School of Lisbon, and graduated in 1996 from National University, Calif., with a bachelor of arts degree.
