Purse: $3.5 million. Winner's share: $630,000.
Television: USA (Thursday-Friday, 4-6 p.m.) and ABC (Saturday-Sunday, 2-4 p.m.).
Last year: Jeff Sluman won the tournament for the second time in five years. He finished at 23-under 261, four strokes ahead of Tim Herron and Steve Lowery.
Last week: Tiger Woods won his third Western Open title, leading wire-to-wire and matching the tournament record of 21-under 267. Rich Beem was second, five strokes back.
Notes: The British Open is next week at Royal St. George's, opposite the B.C. Open. ... Kenny Perry, No. 11 in the world rankings after his Colonial-Memorial sweep, is the highest-ranked player in the field. ... Wisconsin products Jerry Kelly, Steve Stricker, Skip Kendall and J.P. Hayes also are entered along with Minnesota's Herron, Tom Lehman and Aaron Barber. ... Loren Roberts won in 1996 and 2000, setting records in 2000 with a 24-under 260 total and eight-stroke margin. ... Shigeki Maruyama won in 2001 to become the first Japanese player to win a PGA Tour event on the mainland. ... Scott Hoch won in 1995 and 1997.
LPGA TOUR
Canadian Women's Open
Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.
Course: Point Grey Golf & amp; Country Club, Vancouver, B.C. (6,389 yards, par 72).
Purse: $1.3 million. Winner's share: $195,000.
Television: None.
Last year: Meg Mallon won at Sumerlea in Vaudreuil-Dorian, Quebec. Michele Redman, Catriona Matthew and Michelle Ellis tied for second, four strokes back.
Last week: Hilary Lunke won the U.S. Women's Open with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole of a three-way playoff. The 24-year-old Minnesotan, never better than 15th in 23 previous LPGA Tour events, is the first winning qualifier in tournament history. She shot a 1-under 70 in the playoff to edge Angela Stanford (71) and Kelly Robbins (73) at Pumpkin Ridge in Oregon.
Notes: Annika Sorenstam, the 2001 winner at Angus Glen in Markham, Ontario, bogeyed her final hole at Pumpkin Ridge to finish a stroke out of the playoff. She skipped her title defense last year to play in the Compaq Open in Sweden. ... The tournament replaced the du Maurier Classic in 2001 after the major championship was dropped because of restrictions on tobacco promotions. The Women's British Open replaced the du Maurier as a major. ... The 2004 event will be played at the Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ontario. ... The Big Apple Classic is next week in New Rochelle, N.Y., followed by the Evian Masters in France and the Women's British Open at Royal Lytham & amp; St. Annes.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
Ford Senior Players Championship
Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.
Course: TPC of Michigan, Dearborn (6,876 yards, par 72).
Purse: $2.5 million. Winner's share: $375,000.
Television: USA (Thursday-Friday, 2-4 p.m.) and CBS (Saturday-Sunday, 4-6 p.m.).
Last year: Australia's Stewart Ginn closed with a 66 for a one-stroke victory over Jim Thorpe, Hubert Green and Mike McCullough.
Last event: Bruce Lietzke won the U.S. Senior Open on June 29, beating Tom Watson by two strokes at Inverness in Toledo, Ohio.
Notes: Jack Nicklaus won the 1990 tournament at Dearborn Country Club with a tour-record 27-under 261 total . He designed the TPC of Michigan. ... Allen Doyle won in 2001, beating Doug Tewell on the first hole of a playoff. ... The tour is off next week. Play will resume July 24-27 with the Senior British Open at Turnberry, the tour's third straight major.
