Head-on crash kills man
YOUNGSTOWN -- Frank Ford Jr., 53, of Clyde Street was killed in a head-on car crash at 6:11 p.m. Wednesday on Glenwood Avenue at Mahoning Avenue.
Lt. Mark Milstead, head of the accident investigation unit, said Ford's wife, Shirlynne, on doctor's orders, was driving him to Forum Northside Medical Center.
She said she lost all braking on her car as she drove north on Glenwood, came down the hill to Mahoning and crashed into another car, Milstead said. There were no other serious injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
Arrested on drug charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Akron police arrested Jacqueline A. Johnson, 34, of Bedell Road, Berlin Center, Wednesday night in Barberton on a Mahoning County warrant charging her with the manufacture of methamphetamine, a controlled substance.
Once transferred to Mahoning County, she will be arraigned at county court in Sebring, police said.
On July 1, Berlin Township firefighters discovered a methamphetamine lab attached to Johnson's trailer at Lakeside Campground.
The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department also is seeking two men who ran when the trailer caught fire.
Teen flees from police
STRUTHERS -- A 17-year-old boy was being held in the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center after fleeing from police.
Police say they tried to pull over the boy at a stop sign at Garfield Street and Sexton Street on Tuesday night because he fit a description of a male who was seen leaving the South Bridge Street area with a handgun.
As police approached, the driver fled. The car crashed into a fence at Poland Avenue, and the teen got out and ran down Creed Street.
With neighbors joining the pursuit, the teen was caught on Wilson Avenue. Police said they found bullets on the youth, but no gun.

Plaza pays tap-in fee
HUBBARD -- Flying J Travel Plaza has paid its $95,019 sewer tap-in fee to the city. Though the facility opened in April, there was no late charge because the city doesn't have one, Auditor Michael Villano said Wednesday.
Mayor George Praznik had said that Robert Toth, assistant city engineer, originally calculated the fee at $36,000. Calculating the fee was then turned over in April to MS Consultants Inc. of Youngstown, the city's engineering consultant.
The plaza paid its water tap-in fee of $1,618 on Jan. 9.
