Three arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- Drugs and guns were confiscated Tuesday during Gun Reduction Interdiction Project detail, police said. Antonio Stokes, 29, of Clyde Street had seven packaged-for-sale bags of suspected marijuana when arrested in the 900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, police said. He faces a charge of aggravated trafficking in marijuana.
Daryl Hall, 17, of East Boston Avenue was arrested on charges of trafficking in marijuana and carrying a concealed weapon, a loaded .25-caliber gun. William Dean III, 20, of Champlain Avenue was charged with trafficking in marijuana. Police said Hall and Dean, who were arrested on Kenneth Street on the city's East Side, each had packaged-for-sale suspected marijuana. Hall tossed the gun into bushes as police approached, reports show.
Septic tank pumping
YOUNGSTOWN -- Some 839 Beaver Township households will receive reminders from the Mahoning County Board of Health to pump their septic systems. There is no law requiring homeowners to get their septic systems serviced regularly, but preventive maintenance can save repair costs later, said Matthew Stefanak, county health commissioner. Septic tanks should be pumped at different intervals depending on household size and water usage. For instance, a four-person household with a 1,000-gallon septic tank should have it pumped every three years. With their reminder, homeowners will receive pumping interval recommendations and a list of licensed pumpers, Stefanak said.
Funds for food bank
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Foundation awarded a grant of $25,000 to Second Harvest Foodbank to assist with renovations and equipment for the food bank's new facility at 2805 Salt Springs Road. Second Harvest is now at 1122 E. Midlothian Blvd. The grant will be used to purchase a stacker to stock the freezer and cooler and additional racking for the warehouse, said Michael Iberis, Second Harvest executive director. The food bank plans to move into its new facility, donated by the Dr. Jacques Politi family, in early fall, Iberis said.

CANFIELD -- The Mahoning Area American Cancer Society, representing Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, has netted about $1.4 million so far in 2003 from 12 Relay For Life fund-raising events, said Jo-Ann Crank, executive director of the local ARC. One more Relay For Life is scheduled for Aug. 29-30 at Lordstown High School. Proceeds are used by ARC for research, education, advocacy and services to patients and families, said Al Stabilito, ARC communications and advocacy director.
Delivery driver robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A pizza delivery driver was robbed late Tuesday after she pulled into the driveway at 26 Brookline Ave., a vacant house, police said. The Papa John's Pizza driver said a man approached with $20 in his hand as if to pay for the two pizzas. Just as she was about to make change, another man approached showing a handgun, reached into her pants pocket and removed cash and a cell phone. The two men then left on foot, reports show. The pizza shop is located in the Union Square Plaza on Belmont Avenue.
Shoplifted beer
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man in his 40s walked out of Dairy Mart on Mahoning Avenue early today without paying for two 18-packs of beer worth $23.98, a clerk told police. The man walked up to the counter just past midnight as if to pay for the beer but then fled and drove off in a mid-sized blue car.
Grievance filed
WARREN -- The union representing Trumbull County employees filed a grievance against commissioner James G. Tsagaris, after the commissioner publicly admitted to sweeping administration building floors several weeks ago. The job largely has gone undone since a dozen county maintenance department custodians were laid off earlier this year. Union officials say the job should be performed only by their members, said county human resources director James Keating. Keating has 10 days to respond to the complaint. He said the union is asking the county to pay a custodian's full day's pay as penalty -- about $80. Tsagaris could not immediately be reached to comment.
