SANDLOT BASEBALL B.B. Rooners completes title defense

WHEELING, W.Va. -- B.B. Rooners won the Beast of the East tournament for the third consecutive year, defeating seven opponents without a loss.
In flight play, B.B. Rooners defeated River City (Ind.) 11-3, Sistersville (W.Va.) 9-3, Garfield Diamonds 6-0 and Becdir 6-3. In the single-elimination portion of the tournament, B.B. Rooners defeated Miller Health Care-Wharmby's Sports 6-5, Jefferson Post 152 15-7, and in the championship game, Michigan Black Wolf 15-0.
B.B. Rooners also led Maryland Patriots 4-2 in a flight game stopped in the fourth inning by rain.
Team leaders
Ned Moore (Lakeview, Pa. High) led B.B. Rooners offensively. He went 16-for-25 for the tournament, hitting two home runs (one a grand slam) and five doubles, and had 19 RBIs.
Jeff Hehr (Cardinal Mooney) went 9-for-26, with four doubles and two triples, and nine RBIs.
In the championship game, both Moore and Hehr went 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Hehr hit three doubles and a triple.
Also, Tyson Rowland (Warren Harding) went 8-for-21 during the tournament, with two doubles and 11 stolen bases, and Sam Mann (Howland) was 9-for-24, with two doubles and four RBIs.
Other hitting leaders were Don Morris (Titusville, Pa.), 8-for-17 with four RBIs; Marty Heben (Hickory, Pa.), 5-for-15 with a double and five RBIs, and Matt Colella (Shenango, Pa.), 7-for-12 with three RBIs. Brian Chrobak (Neshannock, Pa.), Brian Daugherty (Brookfield) and Josh Faltot (Mercer, Pa.) also had extra-base hits.
Mike Price (Chagrin Falls), John Nastase (Girard) and Allen Hoover (Warren JFK) each won two games during the tournament, and Mann threw a complete-game three-hit shutout. Rooners pitchers had a 2.88 ERA for the tournament.
B.B. Rooners, a member of the Greater Akron Baseball Federation, is 41-6 for the season. The Beast of the East tournament, in its 15th year, attracted 42 teams in the 18-and-under division. B.B. Rooners is the only team to win consecutive championships.
