Fire destroys family home in Transfer

TRANSFER, Pa. -- Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a split-level house at 107 19th St. overnight.
Phil Steele, Transfer fire chief, said the blaze broke out around 3:30 a.m. in the two-car garage at the home of Marilyn Edney and her son, Matt.
The blaze was discovered by neighbors, who heard explosions coming from the garage. Steele said the blasts were probably from acetylene and oxygen tanks stored there.
The Edneys had house guests overnight, but everyone was able to get out safely, Steele said.
Firefighters arrive
The garage side of the house was fully involved in flames when firefighters reached the scene, and the blaze spread through the house, he said.
Cleanup operations were hampered when a thunderstorm passed through around 6:30 a.m., Steele said.
There were no injuries, and a damage estimate wasn't available.
