East meets West in newest fashion wave
KNIGHT RIDDER
Every so often a giant wave from the East sweeps across the fashion horizon.
It happened again this spring with the arrival of delicate floral patterns, kimono-type jackets, cheongsam styling, lavish embroidery, jade and coral jewelry.
As Time magazine notes, they're reminders of the beauty of Asian style. And they surface at a time when Western world designers are mining for new allure.
More testimony comes from Cartier, the jewelry company, which launched a new line, "Le Baiser de Dragon (The Kiss of the Dragon)," in April. It emulates Chinese open-work screens and fen ling wind bells.
It apparently touches the art lovers among us. Cartier told Time the diamond wish knot pendant has already sold out.
