NY-PENN LEAGUE Pitchers stymie struggling Scrappers
Vermont held Mahoning Valley to one hit in a 7-0 victory.
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Cesar Suarez's double in the fifth inning was Mahoning Valley's only hit of the game, as the Scrappers dropped a 7-0 decision to Vermont in a New York-Penn League game Sunday.
Three Expos (3-17) pitchers shut down Mahoning Valley (11-9) otherwise. Starter Devin Perrin (1-2) walked four batters, as did reliever Warmer Gomez, but the Scrappers could not parlay those free passes into runs.
The Scrappers have lost three straight.
In fact, three times following walks in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, Mahoning Valley batters grounded into double plays.
Vermont broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on Franklyn Jiminez's RBI single and a three-run homer by Kory Casto.
Lorvin Louisa's sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 5-0, then Salomon Manriquez's two-run homer in the seventh finished the scoring.
Adam Brandenburg (0-1) was the starter and loser for the Scrappers. He allowed four earned runs in five innings. Honendis Pereyra and Shane Wallace finished the game out of the bullpen.
The series concludes tonight, with left-hander Juan Lara (0-0, 1.93 ERA) going for Mahoning Valley against Vermont's Clint Everts (1-2, 5.12).
The Scrappers are off Tuesday, then return to Cafaro Field Wednesday to face Onoenta at 7:05 p.m. That starts a six-game homestand.
