Hours, fees: Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area is open weekends only from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Sunday year-round, except during races. Admission is $35 for an annual family membership. Coalition members pay $10 for the first weekend day, $5 for each additional day that same weekend. Nonmembers pay $15 per day, per vehicle.
Where to stay: Primitive campsites and RV sites with electricity are available at the park for $5 per night for members, $7.50 for nonmembers. But Gilmer motels offer soft beds, hot showers and served-at-the-table breakfasts. A food concession opens at 8 a.m.
