AROUND THE HORN Sunday's other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees 7, Red Sox 1
NEW YORK -- Andy Pettitte shut down baseball's top-hitting team and Curtis Pride homered in his Yankees debut. Alfonso Soriano went 3-for-5 with a two-run triple to help the Yankees snap a three-game losing streak and move three games ahead of second-place Boston in the AL East. Pettitte (10-6) allowed four hits and struck out 10 in eight innings to win his fifth consecutive start. He retired 16 straight until Manny Ramirez singled with one out in the seventh. Bill Mueller homered in the first inning for the Red Sox.
White Sox 11, Devil Rays 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- As soon as Lou Piniella dyed his hair, Tampa Bay's winning streak stopped. Jose Valentin and Joe Crede homered and drove in three runs apiece to back the pitching of Mark Buehrle. Buehrle (7-10) allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings to win for the fifth straight time since stopping a nine-game losing streak on June 16. The left-hander also snapped the Devil Rays' season-high three-game winning streak. Piniella, Tampa Bay's manager, dyed his hair with blond streaks before the game, keeping a promise to change his hairdo if his young, last-place team won three in a row at any point this season.
Blue Jays 5, Orioles 3, 10 innings
BALTIMORE -- Eric Hinske hit two homers and Chris Woodward singled in the tie-breaking run in the 10th inning as Toronto averted a four-game sweep. Hinske, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles, had four homers and 10 RBIs in the series. Greg Myers also homered as Toronto won for only the second time in nine games.
Royals 5, Tigers 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jose Lima allowed two hits over seven innings. Since Kansas City scouts spotted him pitching for the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League, the former All-Star has gone 4-0 in five starts and compiled a 3.06 ERA -- less than half the 7.77 ERA had he had when the Tigers released him after 20 appearances last year. Lima (4-0) gave up two runs, two hits and five walks in seven innings. Mike MacDougal pitched the ninth for his 10th straight save and 24th in 29 chances.
Athletics 6, Angels 5
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Erubiel Durazo hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning as Oakland avoided a three-game sweep. Eric Byrnes, who doubled off Scott Schoeneweis (1-1) to open the inning, advanced to third on Scott Hatteberg's sacrifice and scored on Durazo's fly to right. Scott Spiezio hit a two-run homer to tie it at 5 in the top of the ninth.
Rangers 5, Mariners 1
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rafael Palmeiro hit his 510th career homer and Ismael Valdes (7-5) was the beneficiary of early run support and snapped a personal three-game losing streak, allowing one run and four hits. Michael Young also homered for the Rangers, who got a two-run single from Doug Glanville and took two of three in the series.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves 7, Expos 5
ATLANTA -- Chipper Jones hit two home runs and Mike Hampton bounced back from two shaky starts. Hampton also had two hits, including his first homer of the season and 11th of his career. Hampton (4-5) won for only the second time in his past 10 starts, going seven innings despite a 24-minute rain delay after the fourth inning, and retiring 12 of the last 15 batters he faced.
Cardinals 4, Cubs 1
CHICAGO -- Woody Williams outpitched Mark Prior and Eduardo Perez hit a three-run homer. Williams (11-3) scattered six hits over 72/3 innings. He gave up just one hit through four and didn't allow a baserunner to reach second until the seventh.
Marlins 6, Phillies 3
PHILADELPHIA -- Mark Redman pitched his second straight complete game and Juan Encarnacion homered and drove in three runs as Florida completed its first sweep in Philadelphia. Juan Pierre went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Ivan Rodriguez drove in a pair for the Marlins. Jim Thome and David Bell homered for the Phillies.
Mets 7, Reds 5
CINCINNATI -- Tony Clark led off the ninth inning with a homer, giving New York its first series sweep this season. Ty Wigginton's two-out, two-run double off closer Scott Williamson tied it at 5 in the eighth, and Clark hit his 10th homer. Timo Perez opened the game with a homer, had an RBI single as part of the tying three-run rally in the eighth, and doubled home another run in the ninth.
Brewers 3, Rockies 1
MILWAUKEE -- Richie Sexson's two-run double in the seventh inning helped Ben Sheets and the Brewers avoid a sweep. With two outs in the seventh, Sexson sent a full-count pitch from Jose Jimenez (0-5) off the right-field wall to break a 1-1 tie. Sheets (7-6) gave up one run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out six.
Giants 3, Padres 2
SAN DIEGO -- J.T. Snow hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning. The Giants started their winning rally with one out when Yorvit Torrealba's sharp grounder glanced off the glove of third baseman Sean Burroughs for a single. Neifi Perez followed with a single off Luther Hackman (2-2) before Ray Durham struck out. Mike Matthews came on and allowed Snow's grounder up the middle that scored Torrealba.
Diamondbacks 2, Dodgers 1
LOS ANGELES -- Rookie Andrew Good allowed an unearned run in six innings. Shea Hillenbrand went 3-for-4 with a double and scored Arizona's second run on Lyle Overbay's sacrifice fly. The Diamondbacks won for the 17th time in 21 games.
