3-month-old South Side infant dies

YOUNGSTOWN -- Jordan Smith, a 3-month-old girl, was dead by the time an ambulance arrived Monday afternoon at an East Midlothian Boulevard apartment, police said.
The baby's father, Jarel L. Smith, no age given, told police that he bottle-fed her about 12:10 a.m. Monday then placed her on the couch with a pacifier in her mouth. The father said he fell asleep and woke at 7 a.m. Monday, found the infant face down and believed she was still sleeping.
Smith said that when he woke at noon and checked on the baby, she was not breathing and had turned blue and purple, reports show.
He called his 18-year-old girlfriend, Dominique Mays, the baby's mother, who lives on Roxbury Avenue, and then called 911 for an ambulance.
The ambulance crew called police, who then called for the crime lab and a coroner's investigator. The baby's parents were interviewed at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
As of this morning, the cause of death was listed as unknown.
