SALEM -- Several mailboxes were either damaged or stolen this weekend, police report. The crimes occurred in the 400 block of Hickory Lane sometime late Saturday or early Sunday.
Fireworks cause outage
SALEM -- Juveniles shooting fireworks are blamed for a power outage. Police said the youngsters were igniting the explosives around 11:18 a.m. Saturday when a rocket struck power lines and caused an outage in the area of North Howard Avenue and West Fifth Street. Police were unable to catch the culprits.
2 teens arrested
SALEM -- Police arrested two 16-year-old Salem boys after motorists along Superior Avenue reported that their vehicles were being struck with objects. Police investigated and discovered that the youths were in an upstairs room of a house in the 700 block of Superior Avenue and were using a slingshot to fire pebbles and BBs at passing vehicles. The boys were arrested around 9:42 p.m. Friday for delinquency and turned over to their parents' custody.
Lawrence Co.'s wanted
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Adelphia Cable will broadcast another episode of the District Attorney's Task Force Update /Lawrence County's Most Wanted on Cable Channel 10. The program, hosted by Matthew Mangino, Lawrence County district attorney, will be broadcast at 8 tonight and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; and at 2 and 8 p.m. Sunday. The program will feature the Lawrence County District Attorney's arson investigation team. Assistant District Attorney Birgitta Tolvanen and Wampum Police Chief Frank Jannetti will talk about the formation and implementation of the arson team and the grant awarded by the Pennsylvania Insurance Fraud Prevention Authority. The second segment of the program will feature the photographs and identities of fugitives in Lawrence County.
Lightning sparks barn fire
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Firefighters spent nine hours fighting a barn fire caused by lightning. No one was injured, but the barn, at 1080 Breakneck Bridge Road, was destroyed, said Perry Township Fire Chief Mark McDevitt. Flames broke out at 4:15 p.m. Friday when lightning hit the barn and shocked the barn's owner, David Weller, who was inside a nearby garage using a power tool, the chief said. Weller was not seriously hurt. There were no animals in the barn, but it did contain 1,600 bales of hay, 1,000 bales of straw and several hundred bushels of oats, McDevitt said. Firefighters from Perry, Franklin, Wayne, Slippery Rock and Wayne Townships, as well as Ellwood City, Chewton, Portersville and Harmony, responded.
Airport quarantine
IMPERIAL, Pa. (AP) -- About 28 passengers were briefly quarantined at Pittsburgh International Airport on Sunday when they complained of flulike symptoms on a flight from Phoenix. The passengers aboard US Airways Flight 150 were loaded onto a bus and examined by paramedics, who cleared them to continue on their way to Charlotte, N.C., said airport spokeswoman JoAnn Jenny. They were apparently doing some work on an Indian reservation and had exhibited some nausea and cold symptoms the day before, Jenny said. She did not know which reservation.
Holiday storm damage
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Scattered power outages and downed trees were left in the wake of a holiday storm. Fire Chief James Donston said firefighters had at least 15 calls as a storm rolled through the area at 3 p.m. July 4th. Trees, telephone poles and wires were down throughout the area. Most of the damage was contained in the 300 and 400 blocks of Wallace Avenue and Boyles Street, said Donston. No injuries were reported. Donston noted that the portico of The Centre Banquet Facility on North Street was blown over by the wind. No one was inside, he said.
Hanoverton fatality
LISBON -- The Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate a one-car crash that killed a Hanoverton man. The patrol said William Wilson, 20, of 11422 Canal St., died Thursday in Salem Community Hospital after the 11:45 p.m. crash. The patrol said Wilson was driving west on Speidel Road near Sanor Road in Hanover Township when the car went off the left side of the road, then crossed back across the highway and went off the right side of the road. The car struck a ditch and overturned, coming to rest on its roof.
