YOUNGSTOWN -- After many fireworks were discharged early Sunday in the 500 block of Cambridge Avenue, police issued a citation to Ryan J. Savarin, 22, of Millcreek Boulevard, Boardman. He is charged with discharging fireworks and was due in municipal court today. Police said they stopped Savarin at 12:20 a.m. Sunday after he ran from the middle of the road to his car and sped off. Aside from used fireworks in the street, police found a large amount of unused fireworks in his car, which they turned over to the fire department. Savarin told police that he came into the city to shoot off the fireworks because his father was angry about his setting them off at their home in Boardman.
Hospice seeks volunteers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Hospice of the Valley is sponsoring a training class for individuals interested in becoming volunteers for the health organization. The class will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning July 31 at the Assumption Village, 5190 Market St. It will continue once a week for six weeks, covering companion visits, respite for families, pastoral care and bereavement issues. House fire probed
AUSTINTOWN -- Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a blaze Thursday night at an East Liberty Street home. The fire, which started about midnight, caused $25,000 damage and was under control in about 15 minutes. There were no injuries.
Charges pendingagainst teenager
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a 17-year-old McDonald boy tried to draw a 7-year-old girl into the car he was in by waving money at her. Police later pulled the car over and found suspected marijuana. Charges against the teenager are pending. The girl's father said two men pulled up to his neighbor's driveway on Woodledge Drive where the girl was playing at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. One of the men waved money out the car window and called to the girl. The girl said no and ran away, her father said. The car sped off. Later, on state Route 46, police pulled over a car matching the description. They said they smelled marijuana in the car and searched it, finding suspected marijuana, rolling papers, a suspected marijuana pipe and a cellophane package containing several pills. The 7-year-old girl identified the 17-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the car, as the person who called to her on Woodledge Drive. The driver of the car was not arrested.
Meeting date changed
NORTH LIMA -- The South Range Local Board of Education will change its regularly scheduled monthly meeting from July 21 to July 28 because of several scheduling conflicts. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. in South Range High School, 11836 South Ave.
Patrol investigatesHanover Twp. fatality
LISBON -- The Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate a one-car crash that killed a Hanoverton man. The patrol said William Wilson, 20, of 11422 Canal St., died Thursday in Salem Community Hospital after the 11:45 p.m. crash. The patrol said Wilson was driving west on Speidel Road near Sanor Road in Hanover Township when the car went off the left side of the road, then back across the highway and off the right side of the road. The car struck a ditch and overturned, coming to rest on its roof.
Fireworks cause outage
SALEM -- Juveniles shooting fireworks are blamed for a power outage. Police said the youngsters were igniting the explosives around 11:18 a.m. Saturday when a rocket struck power lines and caused an outage in the area of North Howard Avenue and West Fifth Street. Police were unable to catch the culprits.
Holiday storm damage
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Scattered power outages and downed trees were left in the wake of a holiday storm. Fire Chief James Donston said firefighters had at least 15 calls as a storm rolled through the area at 3 p.m. July 4. Trees, telephone poles and wires were down throughout the area. Most of the damage was contained in the 300 and 400 blocks of Wallace Avenue and Boyles Street, said Donston. No injuries were reported. Donston noted that the portico of The Centre Banquet Facility on North Street was blown over by the wind. No one was inside, he said.
