NILES -- Maybe the Mahoning Valley Scrappers should rethink long road trips.
On June 24, just prior to a six-hour bus drive to Hudson Valley, the Scrappers lost to Batavia 10-9 in 11 innings. That game took four hours, nine minutes.
Friday, the Scrappers lost 9-7 to the Jamestown Jammers in 12 innings. That marathon took 4:27.
Today, after an 11-hour bus drive, the Scrappers play in Vermont.
Scrappers starting pitcher T.J. Burton was ineffective, falling behind 6-1 after four innings.
However, the Mahoning Valley offense found its stride in the sixth, bundling two singles, a Josh Noviskey double and a Ryan Goleski triple into four runs.
"We just played catch-up all night, that's tough to do," Scrappers manager Ted Kubiak said. "Burton struggled in the beginning, he didn't have anything. He was all over the place."
Deadlock
Mahoning Valley (11-7), which had won five straight New York-Penn League games, tied the game at 6-all in the seventh inning.
Kevin Kouzmanhoff doubled and Mike Conroy tripled him in with the tying run.
Conroy, who is hitting .306, produced his second consecutive four-hit game.
"He's been unbelievable," said Kubiak of his left-fielder who also doubled in the ninth inning.
With one out and the issue knotted at 6, it appeared the Scrappers might win it in the last of the ninth.
Brad Snyder hit a tough ball to left that a Jammer failed to catch. Conroy was waived home by Kubiak but was tagged out after a fine relay throw.
"You can't expect these guys to play like they were playing all along; they did a great job coming back scoring that many runs," Kubiak said. "You'd like to win them all, but you can't."
The Jammers (4-14) used a walk, a run-producing double and an RBI single to score twice in the 12th.
