Volunteering
Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. WILL YOU HELP?
Short-term volunteer help is needed for these agencies:
Camp Fire USA: People needed to assist with Camp Fire's children's camp activities the week of Aug. 4-8.
Canfield Fair: Booth sitters are wanted to help staff the exhibits in the fair's Medical Arts Building. The fair runs from Aug. 26-Sept. 1.
Eastern Regional Kidney Foundation: Booth-sitters wanted for the foundation's exhibit at the Canfield Fair.
Ivy Woods Manor: Volunteers needed to assist with the residents at a trip to a Cleveland Indians game and to the Canfield Fair.
Jubilee Gardens: People needed to help maintain the gardens in Youngstown.
Park Vista: Volunteers needed to assist residents on a trip to the Canfield Fair.
Summer Festival of the Arts: People needed to help with the information booth, children's hands-on tent and registration during the arts festival July 12-13 at Youngstown State University.
Long-term volunteer help is needed for these agencies:
At Home Hospice/Forum Health: People needed to provide care and support of patients and families, or to assist with mailings, filing and telephone calls.
Beeghly Medical Park/Forum Health: There are openings for volunteers to help in the gift shop, pharmacy, information desk, breast center, pastoral care and emergency services.
Beight Farm: Individuals or groups needed to assist with planting, weeding and harvesting gardens. Produce is donated to the needy.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters: Adults needed to serve as role models and mentors for children. Males are especially needed.
Citizen Corps: People will be trained to help in their community in the case of a disaster. Training provided through the Emergency Management Agency.
Jewish Community Center: Volunteers needed to assist with the senior adult group and the day-care center.
Junior Achievement: People needed to teach general economics to pupils in grades kindergarten through 12. Training being provided for the fall.
Goodwill Industries: People needed to read for the blind for Goodwill's Radio Reading program.
Rescue Mission of Greater Youngstown: Volunteers needed for the soup kitchen, to tutor adults, to help with warehouse distribution of donations, baby-sitting, painting and other general maintenance.
RSVP: People needed to help with mailings and various community projects, including the Citizen Corps.
Salvation Army: Numerous opportunities for people to help with youth and senior programs, the soup kitchen, food pantry and perform receptionist duties.
Volunteer Services to Seniors: Volunteers needed to make a commitment to serve as caretakers to seniors. Caretakers would provide transportation to assist with grocery shopping, doctor visits and to make reassurance calls.
