NILES -- The biggest crowd in four years saw one of the most effective pitching performances ever as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers defeated the Jamestown Jammers 10-2 Thursday night.
The crowd of 6,815 at Cafaro Field was about 100 more than the turnout June 25, 1999 against the Auburn Doubledays.
Starter Randy Perez allowed just four hits and two earned runs in six innings to get the victory, his first of the season. Perez threw just 70 pitches.
Relief pitcher Honeudis Pereyra had two perfect innings of work and Shane Wallace threw the ninth inning.
Broke game open
The Scrappers broke the game wide open in the eighth inning, batting around. The frame was highlighted by the third single by Jesus Colmenter and an RBI double by Ryan Mulhern and a two-RBI triple by Brad Snyder.
Also in the inning, Mike Conroy collected his fourth hit.
While the Scrappers had 14 hits, which served as a preview to post-game fireworks, it was the pitching that sealed the victory.
The Jammers were held to five singles and left just three base runners in the game.
Perez was perfect through the first three innings, retiring the Jammers on 26 pitches.
The second time through the order was a different story. Jamestown began the fourth inning with three straight singles and took a 2-0 lead.
After Jammer starter Dustin Kepper blanked the Scrappers for five innings, he was relieved by Nicholas Lovato.
Mahoning Valley was rude to the replacement, greeting him with a ground-rule double by Conroy and an infield single by Clint Chauncey. The No. 9 hitter, Anthony Lunetta, doubled off the left-field wall to make the score 3-2, and then a sacrifice fly by Colmenter brought in the fourth run.
Roster moves
The Cleveland Indians have promoted catcher Javier Herrera and outfielder Eric Johnson to the Class-A Lake County Captains.
In 12 games with the Scrappers, Herrera hit .289. He was a second-round draft pick from the University of Tennessee.
Herrera is expected to take over the starting role for the Captains after former Scrapper Angel Bastardo injured his left knee chasing a wild pitch.
Johnson played in 14 games for the Scrappers this season, batting .281. Entering Thursday night's game, he led the New York-Penn League with 10 stolen bases. He will replace J.J. Sherrill, who was promoted to Kinston.
Catcher Ryan Garko, a third-round selection from Stanford University, will take one of the roster spots. He will be added to the active roster and is expected to report to Mahoning Valley in the next two weeks.
