YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications are available for two types of grants from the Office of Social Action of Catholic Charities of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown.
Operation Rice Bowl grants are available for church or neighborhood groups that offer or plan to provide hunger-related services. Applications are due Aug. 1. Catholic Campaign for Human Development grants are available for church or community groups that offer or plan to develop social justice programs that empower low-income families. Applications are due Aug. 1. Write to C.C.H.D. Grants at the same address. Call (330) 744-8451, Ext. 320.
Boardman man entersdeacon program
BOARDMAN -- Thomas Schurko of Boardman has entered the deacon formation program of the Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh.
Schurko, a funeral director apprentice at Kubina Yuhasz Funeral Home, began a four-year program June 15. Upon completion of the program and ordination, the deacons will assist at liturgical services in their home churches, preach the Gospel, bring the Eucharist to the homebound and work in the service areas of parish life.
Evangelistic outreach
Jericho Project "Jammin' for Jesus" evangelistic outreach will feature entertainment, a clothing giveaway, hot dogs and refreshments July 12, 5-8 p.m., downtown Youngstown, Federal Plaza. For more details, call (330) 783-0117.
Community carnival
McDONALD -- Woodland Park Church's 2nd annual free community carnival will be from 4 to 6 p.m. July 12 at the church, 601 Ohio Avenue. The carnival features free food, games, crafts, a giant castle bouncer and is part of the vacation Bible school celebration, "Kingdom Quest."
Children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Usher board annual day

Trial sermon

Gospel rib burn-off
YOUNGSTOWN -- New Beginnings Outreach Ministries, 322 Wick Avenue, will host a gospel rib burn-off 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 12. Games, pony rides, gospel talent and barbecue contests are among the activities. Call (330) 743-9910.
Camp meeting
CONNEAUTVILLE, Pa. -- The Dunnemans, song evangelists, will mark the start of the Peniel Holiness Camp Meeting, Route 18, with a concert at 7:30 p.m. July 17.
The camp meeting will run through July 27 and feature evangelists Revs. L. Ferrell Towns and John Briscoe. Services are at 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Children's activities are at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Rooms, tent and trailer spaces are available. Ten-day stays for teens are $50.

Women's retreat
WARREN -- New Creation Bible Fellowship Women's Retreat will be Aug. 21-23 at the Avalon Inn & amp; Resort. The cost is $35 per day, $90 for three days, or $160 including overnight accommodations.
