BASIC GRADS
Air Force
Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Karen L. Moorhouse has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.
In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
She is the daughter of Richard Moorhouse of San Bernardino, Calif., and sister of Debra DeConcilus of Howard Street, Girard.
Moorhouse graduated in 1990 from Palm Springs High School, Calif., and received an associate degree in 2002 from Platt College, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
Army
Army Pvt. Rashad Adams has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
During the eight weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics and the use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
Adams is the son of Emary Lee Adams of West Princeton Avenue, Youngstown, and Tonya Lynn Campbell of Chicago, Ill.
He is a 2002 graduate of Chaney High School, Youngstown.
Coast Guard
Coast Guard Seaman Christopher A. Pate, son of Anthony F. Pate of Steubenville, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.
During the eight-week training program, Pate completed a training curriculum consisting of classroom academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship. Emphasis is also placed on physical fitness, health and wellness.
Pate and other recruits also received instruction on the Coast Guard's three core values -- honor, respect and devotion to duty.
HONORS
Soldier of the year
Army Pfc. Aaron S. Foster has been named soldier of the year for Fort Knox, Ky. Foster is a tank crewman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 16th Cavalry Regiment. He is the son of Sherry S. Bires of Pickerington, Ohio, and Bill E. Foster of East Palestine and is a 1997 graduate of East Palestine High School.
ADVANCED TRAINING
Investigations
Special Agent Sean M. Murphy, a special investigator assigned at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., graduated from the criminal investigator training course and the Air Force Special Investigations Academy training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga. At the Air Force Special Investigations Academy, agents learn military and professional ethics and expectations.
Murphy is the son of John E. and Virginia R. Murphy of New Castle, Pa.
Logistical specialist
Army Reserve Pvt. Shakir B. Perkins graduated from the automated logistical specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Lee, Va. He is the son of Kathy and Gerald Perkins of Youngstown and is a 1998 graduate of Rayen High School.

Marine corporal
Marine Corps Cpl. Carl D. Nelson Jr., son of Cassandra L. and Carl D. Nelson of Niles, was promoted to his current rank while serving with 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. is a 1998 graduate of Niles McKinley High School.
Marine lance corporal
Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Joshua C. Myers, stepson of John A. and son of Simone Confer of Hermitage, Pa., was promoted to his current rank while serving with 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Myers is a 2000 graduate of Hickory High School, Hermitage.
