NILES -- Authorities continue their search for a man who presented a note to a teller at a local bank and walked away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
FBI agents canvassed the downtown area Wednesday, searching for witnesses to the morning robbery of the National City Bank, 2 S. Main St.
Niles police are assisting in the investigation, but Chief Bruce Simeone directed all questions to the FBI.
What happened
Authorities said a man walked into the bank at 9:20 a.m., gave a demand note and walked out after getting the money.
Steve Fisher, assistant manager of the bank branch, said no other customers were in the bank at the time and no one was injured. He also said the man did not threaten to harm anyone.
The FBI says the black man is age 40-55, 6 feet tall with a thin build. He either had a few days' beard growth or possibly acne scars and has black and gray dreadlocks, reports said. He was wearing a long blue coat with a hat or hood.
Police were not able to determine in which direction the man fled. Reports said the man left through the rear entrance of the bank, and no vehicle was seen.
Surveillance cameras
Bank officials gave tapes from surveillance cameras to investigators.
The bank's doors were locked after the man left but reopened around 1 p.m. Fisher said the branch will continue to operate under normal business hours.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Niles Police Department at (330) 652-9944 or the FBI at (330) 965-2940.
