Niles council OKs annexation of land
County commissioners have already approved the annexation.
NILES -- City council approved Wednesday the annexation of more than three acres from Howland Township.
The land, owned by the Daniel O. Reitz family trust, will be the site of a Gordon Foods Supply facility. The property is along state Route 46, behind CVS and Taco Bell at U.S. Route 422.
The company will sell bulk foods to area restaurants.
Sewer-line extension
Last December, council agreed to extend the city's storm sewer lines to the property in anticipation of the annexation.
Trumbull County commissioners have already approved the measure, and Howland Township trustees did not object.
Council also approved a resolution supporting Howland Township's concerns about traffic congestion at the Route 82/46 intersection and the nearby area of development.
The area already has a Lowe's store, and developers plan to build a Sam's Club in the area, where tens of thousands of vehicles pass daily.
Councilman Stephen Papalas introduced the resolution, saying it was a "show of solidarity and unity" between Niles and Howland.
It was announced that the city will apply for a $99,000 Community Development Block Grant for flood and drainage work and for its fair-housing program.
