Nucleus Research, based in Wellesley, Mass., estimates unsolicited e-mail is costing companies $874 per employee a year, assuming a $30/hour pay rate. Its research indicates companies lose approximately 1.4 percent of each worker's productivity annually, and the average worker receives nearly 3,500 spam messages per year.
Nucleus estimates the use of e-mail filters and anti-spam tools helps reduce the loss by 25 percent.
Trying to thwart hackersof battlefield computers
URBANA, Ill. -- Hoping to thwart hackers, the military is launching a new research effort at the University of Illinois to improve the security of battlefield computers and communications systems.
Officials at the school's National Center for Supercomputing Applications announced an initial $5.7 million grant from the Office of Naval Research to develop technology against enemy hackers.
