LITTLE LEAGUE District tourneys begin play Monday
Six brackets are set for players ages 9-14.
CANFIELD -- Fifteen Mahoning Valley 11-12-year-old baseball teams will compete when the Little League district tournament opens Monday with seven games.
The opening matchups for the double-elimination event are Campbell at Brookfield, Lakeview at Struthers, Boardman East at Austintown West, Newton Falls at Niles, Austintown South at Canfield, Warren at Lordstown and Columbiana at Poland.
Boardman West has a first-round bye and will play the Campbell-Brookfield winner on Wednesday.
The district winner will be crowned on July 20 and advance to the state tournament at Jefferson that begins on July 23.
Fourteen 9-10 teams will compete for the district crown when that bracket begins play on July 14. The district winner will compete at the state tournament at Hamilton that begins on Aug. 3.
The Junior League division for teams ages 13-14 has three teams: Canfield, Boardman and Brookfield. The winner will travel to Maumee for the state tournament that opens on July 25.
Softball
In Little League softball for ages 11-12, seven teams will compete at the district level when play begins on Tuesday.
The opening-round matchups are Canfield vs. Poland, Lakeview vs. Niles and Warren vs. Boardman. Struthers has a bye and will play the Canfield-Poland winner on July 10.
The district winner will compete in the state tournament at Ashtabula that begins on July 19.
Six teams are entered in the 9-10 bracket that opens on July 15. The district champion will advance to the state tournament at Canfield Baseball Club's McCune Park that begins Aug. 2.
Boardman, Poland and Canfield will battle for the Junior League (ages 13-14) crown.
