Cops called to ball game
NILES -- An argument during a baseball game brought police to Waddell Park around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Reports say a 16-year-old player who disagreed with a called strike in a Colt League game yelled at and shoved the home plate umpire, 48-year-old Steven Kline of East Liverpool. Reports said Kline had to restrain the Grant Street teenager.
No arrests were made, but the player was ejected, and his team was forced to forfeit the game.
Dean for 13 years resignsfrom post at KSUTC
CHAMPION -- After 13 years as dean of Kent State University's Trumbull Campus, Dr. David Allen is ready for a new chapter in life.
Allen, 62, of Newton Falls, has resigned as dean, effective at month's end.
"I don't have any immediate plans," Allen said. "I want to take some time off."
He doesn't plan to leave the area.
Allen came to the Trumbull campus after serving as associate dean of admissions at Penn State University, where he previously ran the ROTC program.
Allen earned his master's and doctoral degrees while on active duty with the Air Force. He said he became interested in higher education through his own ROTC assignments.
Allen resigned about a year ago, then decided to stay on to finish some projects.
"I decided that when those projects were done or near done, it would be time to go, and that time is now," he said.
Road contractor hired
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners have awarded The Shelly Company of Twinsburg a $1.1 million contract to carry out the county's annual road paving program.
They also awarded a $460,000 contract Wednesday for the construction of waterlines and street improvements in the Bolindale neighborhood of Howland Township to J.S. Northeast Co., of Girard.
The work is part of a $600,000 planned project, about half of which will by paid with state grants.
Warren house burns
WARREN -- A fire just after 3 a.m. today caused an estimated $5,000 damage at 304 Idylwild St., N.W.
The fire department said the blaze began on the front porch of the 21/2 -story frame house and was extinguished in five minutes.
The occupant was not home.
Fire Chief Ken Nussle said the house was the scene of a homicide last month, the second such occurrence in a week.
Friday there was a fire at 947 Oak St., S.W., also the scene of an earlier homicide.
Meanwhile, a fire about 3:45 a.m. in a dryer in the laundry at St. Joseph Hospital caused $700 worth of damage, the fire department said.
Exercise trail bids dumped
GIRARD -- Bids by two companies to build a city exercise trail have been rejected as being too high.
George Zokle of CT Consultants in Youngstown, which is handling the project, said the work will go out to bid again.
Soda Construction Co. of Niles submitted a bid of $85,000, and Trumbull Paving Co. of Cortland bid $65,000, according to Zokle.
The total estimate for the project is $53,500.
Buckeye 5 winner
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christine Bilski of Youngstown won a top $100,000 prize for matching all five numbers in the Ohio Lottery's July 1 Buckeye 5 drawing. She filed her claim Wednesday at the lottery commission's Youngstown regional office in Austintown.
After federal and state tax withholdings totaling 28.5 percent, Bilski will receive a check for $71,500. She let the computer at Gino's Drive Thru South on South Avenue in Boardman pick the winning numbers: 2-13-15-24-27.
I-79 lanes to be open
MERCER, Pa. -- Lane restrictions on I-79 in Mercer County were expected to be removed today for the July 4 holiday.
All lanes, between mile posts 110 and 137 were to open at 4 p.m. today, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Construction work resumes Monday.
Postal funds charges
WARREN -- A federal grand jury in Cleveland has returned a two-count indictment against Bernard W. Dziedzic, 54, of Kenilworth Avenue S.E.
He is charged with misappropriation of postal funds and false entries and reports of money and securities.
Fraud indictment returned
GIRARD -- A federal grand jury in Cleveland has returned a five-count indictment against Gerald W. Dickson, 57, of Patricia Drive.
He is charged with conspiracy, bank fraud, use of a false Social Security number and two counts of unlawful use of an access device.
He is accused of conspiring with his wife, who is now deceased, to commit the offenses of credit card fraud and the use of a fake Social Security number.
