BASEBALL
MIAMI (AP) -- A photographer at the Florida Marlins' game was hospitalized after being hit in the head by a flying bat, causing significant bleeding.
The unidentified photographer sustained lacerations to the face and never lost consciousness, the Marlins said. He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, and there was no immediate word on his condition.
The game between the Atlanta Braves and Marlins was delayed 18 minutes after the man was hit in the seventh inning when a bat slipped out of the hands of Atlanta's Darren Bragg.
NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Mets traded 12-time All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar to the Chicago White Sox for three minor league prospects.
In exchange for Alomar, the Mets received pitchers Royce Ring and Edwin Almonte and infielder Andrew Salvo.
The busy White Sox acquired outfielder Carl Everett from the Texas Rangers, hours after making the deal for Alomar.
Chicago will let the Rangers pick either two or three minor leaguers from a pool. The White Sox will also receive cash from Texas to offset part of Everett's $9.15 million contract.
MIAMI (AP) -- Florida Marlins general manager Larry Beinfest announced that the team will not trade third baseman Mike Lowell, ending weeks of speculation.
Lowell is having his best year with Florida, where he's played five seasons. He is tied for the National League lead in home runs with 25.
BASKETBALL
DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Mavericks signed coach Don Nelson to a three-year contract extension.
Nelson already was under contract as general manager through 2005-06. Now he'll keep both jobs that long, continuing a double duty he began in the 1997-98 season.
The Mavericks also announced the signing of assistant coach Del Harris to a three-year contract extension.
ST. FRANCIS, Wis. (AP) -- The Milwaukee Bucks promoted Larry Harris to general manager, following weeks of speculation about the team's future.
Harris agreed to a four-year contract. He was chosen as acting general manager Sunday after the Bucks released Ernie Grunfeld, the GM since 1999, who was hired Monday as president of basketball operations for the Washington Wizards.
GOLF
LEMONT, Ill. (AP) -- The PGA Tour will begin using a test in January that determines whether clubs are legal.
At issue is a physics term called the "coefficient of restitution" (COR), which measures how quickly a golf ball springs off the face of a club at impact. When the face is ultra thin, it allows for more of a trampoline effect.
Golf's ruling bodies last year set the limit at 0.83 for professional tours.
A new machine to test the clubs will be onsite at all events starting next year, commissioner Tim Finchem said.
According to Finchem, the test won't be mandatory. Players will be expected to police themselves.
HOCKEY
NEW YORK (AP) -- Glen Sather, already the New York Rangers team president and general manager, will coach the club again next season.
Sather replaced rookie coach Bryan Trottier after 54 games last season and was unable to find a suitable replacement for the job in the offseason.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- The San Jose Sharks acquired New York Rangers captain Mark Messier for future considerations, just hours before he became an unrestricted free agent.
The move was made Monday night and announced Tuesday. It allows the Sharks to collect a compensatory draft pick when Messier signs with another team.
Messier is still expected to re-sign with the Rangers.
The Sharks declined to pick up a $3 million option on left wing Adam Graves' contract, allowing him to become a free agent. The Sharks still hope to re-sign Graves, general manager Doug Wilson said.
SOCCER
MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Soccer superstar David Beckham signed a four-year contract with Real Madrid to complete his $40 million move from Manchester United.
Beckham, who passed a physical before signing, will be introduced by the team on Wednesday. More than 500 journalists are credentialed for the event.
AUTO RACING
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- The nation's second-largest food company signed a four-year agreement to sponsor the NASCAR race at Kansas Speedway.
The first Banquet 400 presented by ConAgra Foods, a Winston Cup event, will be held Oct. 5 at the track in Kansas City, Kan.
