Historical society offers camps

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is sponsoring three-day interactive camps at the Arms Family Museum of Local History, 648 Wick Ave. The three programs are catered to various age groups and focus on local history and the Ohio Bicentennial.
From 10 a.m. to noon July 22-24 children age 4 to 6 will learn about the "Wild, Wild Western Reserve," seeing how pioneer children learned and played, and what they ate 200 years ago. The cost is $25.
Children age 5 to 9 will explore the history of crime-solving from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily July 29-31, using historical newspapers to learn about unsolved crimes in the Mahoning Valley. They will also solve a "crime" on the museum grounds. The cost is $35.
For children age 10 to 13, a 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. camp running Aug. 5-7 will show how technology can help preserve history. Children will produce oral histories and use the Business and Media Archives of the Mahoning Valley, with items dating to 1926.
The discounted cost is $5 for society members. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline is July 14 for the July camps and July 25 for the August camp. Call (330) 743-2589, write mvhs@mahoninghistory.org or visit www.mahoninghistory.org.
