Does egret regret bumpy road trip?
EAST LAKE, Fla. (AP) -- An egret that survived a road trip from Orlando to Pennsylvania trapped inside a minivan bumper has been released into the wild.
The little white bird, nicknamed Miles for the distance he traveled, was released Friday in a remote, grassy field in west central Florida, where he soared above the trees and out of sight.
Pennsylvania residents Doug and Michele Marsico had been taking their 3-year-old son to Disney World when the vehicle hit the flying egret April 10. Assuming the bird had been killed, they shipped the van on the Amtrak Auto Train to Virginia, then drove it the rest of the way home to Mechanicsburg, Pa.
It wasn't until Michele Marsico's father crawled under the van to investigate a strange noise that they found the bird, which had been trapped for six days by the time it was removed.
The egret suffered only a broken left leg and injured left foot.
For three weeks, a nearby wildlife rescue center cared for the bird, which was briefly named Butch after the Harrisburg body shop worker who removed it from the minivan bumper.
It was flown to Florida on May 8 to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary.
"That is one tough bird," Heath said.
