YOUTH TRACK Youngstown Striders qualify 30 for AAU Junior Olympics
Sarroya Townsend earned berths in three categories.
CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Thirty members of the Youngstown Striders Track and Field Club qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics at the recent AAU Region VI track meet.
The AAU Junior Olympics will be at Eastern Michigan University from July 23-30.
Leading the way with a first-place finish in the 15-16-year-old girls shot put was Sarroya Townsend (36 feet, 9 inches).
Townsend also placed second in the discus (110 feet, 6 inches) and third in the javelin (105 feet, 8 inches).
Boys
The 11-12-year-old boys 4x100-meter relay team (Akise Teague, Daniel Helms, Ricky Williams, Allen Jones) finished first (55.2).
Also in that age bracket, Teague finished fourth long jump (14 feet, 8 inches) while Allen Underwood placed third in the discus (68 feet, 9 inches).
For 13-14-year-old boys, Fitzgerald Edwards finished fourth 200 (24.66) while Gene Hightower placed second shot put (36 feet, 8 inches) and third in the discus (122 inches, 9 inches).
The 4x100 relay (Rashawn Cook, Maurise Kerns, Edwards, Hightower) finished second (47.8) while the 4x400 relay (Cook, Dwayne Townsend, Kerns, Edwards) placed third (4:09).
In the 15-16-year-old boys division, Byron Mosley placed fourth in the 100 (11.08) and Justin Jones finished third in the javelin (105 feet, 8 inches).
The 17-18-year-old boys 4x100 relay (Dorian Townsend, Michael Gibson, Jamar Gilford, Rashaud Rivers) finished third (43.5)
John Helms Jr. finished third in the 9-year-old boys 100 (14.8) and 200 (30.6).
In the 7-8-year-old boys bracket, Darien Townsend finished third long jump (10 feet, 6 inches) and Melvin Gregory Jr. placed second in the shot put (16 feet, 4 inches).
Girls
Eroncia Berry qualified with fourth-place finishes in the 9-year-old girls 400 (1:15) and 800 (2:53).
In the 9-10-year-old girls bracket, the 4x400 relay (Berry, Jacaia Stoffer, Lesa Oliver, Maressa Carter) placed third (5:20) and the 4x100 relay (Leslie Huff, Oliver, Aliyah Daniels, Stoffer) finished third (1:01).
Carter placed third in the long jump (11 feet, 3 inches) while Tiaunna Brown placed third in the shot put (21 feet, 5 inches).
Tyla Brown finished fourth in the 13-14-year-old girls discus (65 feet, 10 inches).
The 11-12-year-old girls 4x100 relay team (Alexandra Hines, Shaniece Daniels, Darielle Cofield, Jayne Roland) finished second (56.5).
