3 juveniles face charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three North Side boys accused of pistol-whipping and robbing a 49-year-old Norwood Avenue man in his home about 9 p.m. Sunday were arrested about 90 minutes later, police said. The victim, bleeding from his mouth, told police that cash was taken as well as his 1990 Oldsmobile. At 10:30 p.m. Sunday, police found the boys, ages 12, 13 and 13, sitting in front of the Atlantic Food Mart on Wick Avenue, slightly injured after being involved in a large fight. A witness told police that he saw the boys get out of a 1990 Oldsmobile, which police identified as having been stolen from the Norwood Avenue man. The victim identified the boys as his attackers. All three were taken to the juvenile justice center to faces charges of aggravated robbery.
Shootings reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lawanda A. West, 29, was shot in the stomach and breast outside her apartment in the 900 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard about 11 p.m. Sunday, police said. West was in guarded condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Another victim, John H. Johnson, 31, of Overland Avenue, was hit in his right calf and treated at the hospital. A friend of West's told police he heard many shots but didn't see who fired.
Bone in lake isn't human
YOUNGSTOWN -- A pelvic bone found Sunday afternoon in McKelvey Lake by the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department dive team was not human, according to a coroner's investigator who inspected the bone at the scene. The dive team recovered several firearms that had been tossed into the lake, police said.
Newspaper boxes found
YOUNGSTOWN -- Loud metal banging in the 200 block of East Ravenwood Avenue at 3:30 a.m. today drew the attention of police, who suspected someone may have been breaking into a house or car. The officers said what they found was L.V. Jennings, 47, in his garage with a hammer and chisel, trying to pry open a Tribune-Chronicle newspaper box. Three Vindicator boxes, partially covered by sheets, were also in the garage, police said. Jennings faces charges of receiving stolen property, possession of criminal tools, theft and tampering with coin machines.
Arson attempt foiled
LIBERTY -- An alert guard scared off a man intent on setting fire to a local towing company.
The guard told police he saw a dark car with Pennsylvania plates pull into the lot at Miller's Towing on Belmont Avenue around 1 a.m. today.
Reports said a passenger -- a white male, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds and wearing jeans and a sleeveless blue shirt -- got out and started pouring gasoline on a wooden fence surrounding the impound lot.
When the guard shouted, the car took off toward the Holiday Inn parking lot.
Liberty checkpoints
LIBERTY -- Township police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are conducting checkpoints and other traffic enforcement measures through July 13. The effort is part of the statewide "You Drink & amp; Drive, You Lose" campaign to crack down on drunken drivers. Police Chief Anthony Slifka urges people who may have had too much to drink to choose a sober designated driver, take public transportation or spend the night where they are.

HUBBARD -- Wildlife photographs by local photographer Pam E. Goller are on display in the public library. The photographs can be viewed during normal library hours. Additional Goller prints, including Amish photos, can be viewed at Artasia Frame Shop in Hubbard.
Toddler wrecks car
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A parked car put out of gear by a toddler crashed into a house and another parked car. Police said Austin Arnold, 2, was playing near his John Street home when he got into his mother's 1992 Mercury Sable and sent it sailing backward into the street. Police said the car hit a home at 827 East Pearl St., tearing off railings, a tree and then a parked car owned by Adrian Moyer of Oak Street. Moyer's 1998 Honda Accord had to be towed, they said. The child was not injured, according to police.
Accidentally shot in hand
SALEM -- A 16-year-old East State Street boy was treated at Salem Community Hospital for a hand injury he sustained by accidentally shooting himself with a BB gun Saturday afternoon. Police reports said the boy held his left hand over the gun barrel and pulled the trigger because he wanted to feel the air discharge. He found out too late that there was a BB in the chamber.
