NORTH JACKSON -- Jackson Township will have a Founder's Day celebration on Saturday to celebrate its birth 200 years ago.
Locals and visitors will celebrate 200 years of families, farming and small business in the area.
The event will feature a parade on Mahoning Avenue at 10 a.m., a picnic at Liberty Park at 12:30 p.m., and activities stretching through the day from 1 to 8 p.m. at Jackson-Milton High School and the park.
"Look for this to be a day of fun, fellowship and making memories," said event organizer Peg Leonard.
Leonard said the township, one of the oldest in Ohio, has retained its small-town flavor through the years.
The schedule
Along with live bands and vocal groups, Jackson Township Founder's Day 1803-2003 will host a car show, historical displays, an art contest and a birds of prey demonstration.
Also on the agenda are cloggers, a lumberjack contest, karaoke, a baseball tournament and a beard contest offering prizes to the longest and most unique beards.
The post office has made a commemorative cancellation stamp to honor the township's founding.
A historical display will exhibit photos and newspaper clippings, some dating back more than 100 years, Leonard said.
Leonard expects about 1,200 people, including former township residents, will attend the celebration.
Many families have even scheduled their reunions to coincide with the event.
The 301-member parade starts at Liberty Steel Products Inc. on 11650 Mahoning Ave. and ends at the high school.
