PA PARKS McConnell's Mill/Moraine



Several hikes and nature programs will be conducted during next weekend at Moraine and McConnell's Mill state parks, near Portersville, Pa.
MCCONNELL'S MILL
Nature Symbols of Pennsylvania: During this hourlong program, a naturalist will discuss what many of the Keystone State's symbols are, as well as their significance. Meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Kildoo picnic area.Hell's Hollow Wilderness Hike: This 4-mile hike along the Slippery Rock Gorge will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and a naturalist will discuss the area's geological and industrial history. Hikers are encouraged to bring a water container, sturdy shoes, something to eat and binoculars. Meet at the Hell's Hollow parking lot.Someone dressed as Smokey Bear will arrive at 1 p.m. July 6 at the Kildoo picnic area on the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department truck. Participants are invited to view the firefighters' equipment and have their picture taken.Night Lights: This program, from 9 to 10 p.m. July 11 at the Kildoo ballfield, will explore the firefly, designated as Pennsylvania's state insect. The park also features two half-hour corn grinding demonstrations Saturdays and Sundays, beginning at 1 and 3 p.m., as well as two 45-minute grist mill tours starting at 2 and 4 p.m. Both are at the Old Mill.
MORAINE
Symbol of a Nation: The bald eagle will be the highlight of this program, which will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Pleasant Valley picnic area on the South Shore.The Unhuggables: This hourlong event, starting at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sunken Garden Trailhead on the South Shore, will explore myths and misconceptions about various animals' habitats and behavior.Owls found in Pennsylvania will be featured during a program, which is from 9 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Porters Cove on Badger Hill Road.
