ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The news Wednesday that Patrick Dennehy had disappeared from Waco, Texas, came as no surprise to friends at the University of New Mexico, where he once played basketball for the Lobos.
The fact that his car had been found abandoned with no license plates in Virginia Beach, Va., however, was upsetting.
The Lobos' Senque Carey, who has known the 6-9 junior since Dennehy was a freshman in high school, said he first learned his friend was missing 10 days ago when police contacted him to see if Carey had seen or heard from Dennehy.
Carey said he hadn't talked to Dennehy since Dennehy came to Albuquerque during the Christmas break to visit family and friends.
"I'm worried about him," Carey said. "I'm trying not to stress too hard. I'm hoping for the best, and I'm praying for him."
Both players attended St. Francis High School in East Palo Alto, Calif., and were recruited to New Mexico by former coach Fran Fraschilla.
Nelson Washington, who once coached Dennehy in Amateur Athletic Union games in the Bay area, said he also had been contacted about Dennehy recently. Washington also hasn't seen Dennehy since December.
Not seen since June 11
Waco police issued a statement Wednesday notifying the public that Dennehy, who now attends Baylor University, had not been seen since June 11.
The Waco Tribune-Herald reported Friday that Dennehy's roommate, Chris Turk, might have been the last to see Dennehy in Waco. Turk told the Waco newspaper he could not remember whether he had spoken with Dennehy before going to Tennessee for a music festival June 11, but he did remember that the last time he saw Dennehy the player was fine.
Turk said he returned home June 16 to find everything normal except dogs the roommates keep had no food or water and looked like they had lost weight.
"I just figured he skipped town and was being irresponsible," Turk said.
Was in summer school
Turk told the paper that Dennehy was enrolled in summer classes and spent much of his time playing basketball. He said Dennehy is not the type to leave on an extended trip without telling someone.
Former New Mexico head basketball coach Dave Bliss, now the head coach at Baylor, said in a statement that he and his assistants hadn't spoken with Dennehy in weeks.
Dennehy participated in the New Mexico Games in Albuquerque in May, playing basketball in the men's open division on a team with former Lobos Clayton Shields and Greg Brown.
Brown said Wednesday night that Dennehy seemed happy and healthy at the time.
New Mexico coach Ritchie McKay kicked Dennehy off the team last year after Dennehy walked off the court during practice. It was the second time Dennehy walked out on teammates, having also done so during a game at Air Force during the 2001-02 season when Fraschilla was the Lobos coach.
