Police officers arrest 'fugitives of the week'
Officers also arrested a woman at the house on a warrant.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Footprints in the snow led police from a burglary in progress on Ohio Avenue to a house where two Vindicator "fugitives of the week" were found and arrested today, police said.
Neighbors on Ohio Avenue told Patrolmen Mike Cox and Randy Miller that they'd seen two men walk up a driveway in the 2200 block, then heard the sound of glass breaking about 12:30 a.m. The officers checked the house then followed two sets of footprints to the back door of 275 W. Dennick Ave.
As Cox and Miller approached the back door, they heard noises coming from the basement through a piece of cardboard that covered up a window. By this time, Patrolman Carlo Eggleston arrived, and the sound of glass breaking in the basement could be heard, police said.
The officers knocked, but no one responded. Eventually, the resident, Kenya Jones, 22, came up the basement steps and told the officers she was alone in the house, according to police.
In the basement
When told about the two sets of footprints, Jones whispered to police that two friends were in the basement.
Keon L. Richardson and Melvin Johnson came up the steps after being told that, if they didn't, a police dog would be sent down to get them, police said.
Richardson, 18, of Park Vista Avenue, and Johnson, 18, of Broadway, were handcuffed and taken into custody. Both were featured in Sunday's newspaper as fugitives of the week, each charged with two counts of felonious assault.
Jones told Eggleston that the men had talked about having guns and gave permission to have the house searched. Two loaded handguns were found on the floor between the clothes dryer and a wall, where police said they'd heard noises.
The guns resulted in Richardson and Johnson each being charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
Eggleston also arrested Jones on a charge of failure to report to probation in a 2000 case that involved driving under suspension and driving an unsafe vehicle.
The third fugitive featured last Sunday, Stephan Breedlove, 18, of Broadway, was arrested earlier this week at home. He is charged with two counts of felonious assault.
